Understanding Leadership Styles

An early contribution to the literature on leadership styles was made by Robert Tannenbaum and Warren H Schmidt back in the 1950s. They proposed the idea of a ‘leadership continuum’ consisting of seven stages. Each stage of the continuum involves a decreasing use of managerial authority alongside an increasing level of subordinate freedom.
