Substituting with Boron Boron, with five protons and five electrons, can also substitute in a silicon crystal where a silicon atom would normally reside. Because a boron atom has only three electrons available in its bonding shell, only three covalent bonds can be formed between a boron atom and the silicon atoms in a crystal.
