Vector Calculus and Multiple Integrals
The (right-handed) Cartesian coordinate system we use has three orthogonal unit vectors. Vectors can be described as F = FX i + FY j + FZ k (in the diagram below left, FX=a1, Fy=a2, Fz=a3) The unit vectors along the x,y,z axes in Cartesian coordinates are ^i,^j,^k.

scipp.ucsc.edureal orthogonal n ×n matrix with detR = 1 is called a special orthogonal matrix and provides a matrix representation of a n-dimensional proper rotation1 (i.e. no mirrors required!). The most general three-dimensional rotation matrix represents a counterclockwise rotation by an angle θ about a fixed axis that lies along the unit vector ˆn.
