Watership down - The Unique Sheep

1 Watership down Designed by Janine le Cras for The Unique Sheep Based on the famous book of the same name, this shawl evokes the feeling of the British countryside. Rabbits scamper down the spine bobbing their little tails and the wings of the Faroese shaped shawl contain references to the flora and fauna so beautifully described in the book. The shawl is worked in one piece top down from the neck, starting with a garter st tab construction, with not one but two knitted on borders. Materials: 1 shawl set of Unique Sheep lace weight yarn (aprox 1200yd). Size (US #3) circular needle 36 inch or size required to get gauge Removable stitch markers Tapestry needle for sewing in ends With a US#3 ( ) circular needle cast on 3 sts and work 62 rows of garter st.

2 Turn the strip so that you have the last st worked uppermost on your right hand side and pick up 31 sts by knitting into the troughs of the garter st down the long side of the strip. Pick up a further 3 sts from the cast on edge (37 sts in all). 1. Set up row: K3, PM, p1, PM, P29, PM, P1, PM, k3. If you wish to colour code your markers to make it easier to read your knitting, the two end markers mark the 3 st garter st border and the others mark the location of the increases on either side of the central spine portion. Starting at Row 1 of Chart 1 with the RS facing work as follows, slipping all markers as you reach them. K3, row 1 Chart 1, row 1 Chart B, row 1 Chart 1, k3. Continue working as set until you have completed the whole of Chart 1.

3 You will need to repeat Chart B down the center spine. Also remember to keep the 3 st grtr st border going at each edge. Work Chart 2 as follows: K3, row 1 Chart 2a, row 1 Chart B, row 1 Chart 2c, k3. Continue in the same manner for Charts 3-6. Chart B is the same throughout and should be repeated continuously. After completing Chart 6, break the yarn. With the WS facing cast on 22 stitches on the LH needle using a cable cast on. Begin Chart 7 with row 1. Work until row 36, then repeat rows 9-36 until you have 5sts left at the end of the shawl (22 repeats). Finish with rows 37-46. Bind off all sts knitwise using an ordinary knit cast off. With the RS facing knit into the back and the front of every loop from the slipped edge of the first border.

4 (634sts total) Turn work With the WS facing yarn cast on 14 stitches on the LH needle P13, ptog with a st from the body of the shawl. Work Chart 8 until all the sts from the body of the shawl have been incorporated ( repeats) then cast off all remaining sts Gradiance Transitions Start your first Gradiance Transition at the beginning of Chart 4. Without working a transition, begin Skein 3 at beginning of Chart 7. Without working a transition, begin Skein 4 at beginning of Chart 8. 2.
