Although South Africa has not experienced large epidemics that occur periodically in the meningitis belt and occasionally in refugee camps in central Africa, occasional clusters/outbreaks do cause national alarm. It is vital that this commonly fatal disease is managed GUIDELINES emphasise the importance of a high index of suspicion, early detection and appropriate rapid management of the disease.
