A NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL POLICY FRAMEWORK DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY 1 of 54 2 of 54 NEW DIRECTIONS IN INDUSTRIAL POLICY : EXECUTIVE FOREWORD BY THE MINISTER OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY In the past few years it has become evident that South Africa s economy is capable of higher levels of economic performance. Consequently government aims principally through the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa (ASGI-SA) to push purposefully towards its 2014 vision to achieve six percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth from 2010 onwards, and to reduce unemployment and poverty by half. In order to achieve this higher growth and development trajectory the South African economy needs to undergo some fundamental restructuring.
