A Raisin in the Sun Pre-Reading Lesson Prior to the class beginning to read the play A Raisin in the Sun , we will use two outside texts to discuss a few of the larger themes in the reading as well as to connect the play to the rest of the unit. First, the class will read and discuss the Langston Hughes poem, A Dream Deferred and then they will read and discuss Martin Luther King Jr s I Have a Dream speech. Both of these texts will introduce the theme of having a dream and the way in which the characters in the play as well as all African Americans during this time period have to struggle to reach their dreams. A. A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes "What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a Raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run?
