CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF interest Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative Working Groups I. Background Tackling industrial greenhouse gas emissions is critical to meet the net zero targets in line with the Paris Agreement. Today, industry accounts for one fourth of global energy-related emissions. Sectors like cement, concrete and steel alone account for around 16 per cent of emissions. These sectors face unique challenges in relation to the supply and uptake of technologies and innovations that can support decarbonization and the demand for low carbon products to justify large investments required to implement low-carbon technologies. To address a variety of challenges related to stimulating demand for low carbon products, UNIDO, as the UN specialized agency mandated with inclusive and sustainable industrial development, in collaboration with Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), a community of the world s largest and leading countries, companies, and international experts working together to accelerate clean energy transitions launched the Industrial Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI) in June 2021.
