29 Chapter 4. permeability , Diffusivity, and Solubility of Gas and Solute Through Polymers Introduction The diffusion of small molecules into polymers is a function of both the polymer and the diffusant. Factors which influence diffusion include: (1) the molecular size and physical state of the diffusant; (2) the morphology of the polymer ; (3) the compatibility or Solubility limit of the solute within the polymer matrix; (4) the volatility of the solute; (5) and the surface or interfacial energies of the monolayer films (1-4).
