33 3 Education Introduction Education is a priority area for the South African government. Over the past five years government has further increased efforts to improve the state of Education in the country. In 2010 the Department of Basic Education (DBE) released Action Plan to 2014: Towards the Realisation of Schooling 2025, a report outlining the priority areas that need to be addressed in this period. The plan s overall aim is to improve learner performance by overcoming the weaknesses in the Education system. This is to be done particularly by improving access to Education , providing safe buildings, providing learning and teaching materials promptly and by increasing educator numbers and improving their skills.
