Electronic voting systems have been around for a long time. The rst optical scanners were rst used in 1962, and Direct Recording Electronic Voting Machines (DREs) were introduced in 1975. Complex, time-consuming and error-prone count-ing processes have been made faster, easier and more reliable with electronic mech-anisms.
