this basic oscillator gives an excellent performance in many simple applications, if a stable frequency is an important factor in the choice of clock oscillator, there are of course better options. Crystal Controlled Clock Oscillator Fig. 5.1.3 uses three gates from a 74HCT04 IC, and a crystal to provide an accurate frequency of oscillation.
