Natural gas is composed of alkanes; it is about 90% methane with small amounts of ethane and propane. Methane, ethane, propane, and butane are gasses at room temperature. Pentane is barely a liquid at room temperature and the higher molecular weight alkanes are liquids, the straight-chain versions becoming solids at about 16 carbon atoms.
