Any nth-order ode can be written as a system of n first-order odes. The process of doing so is straightforward, as illustrated in the following example: Example 1.0.8. Consider the second-order ode y00+(cos x)y0+y2 = ex. To avoid using second derivatives, we introduce a new dependent variable z = y0so that z0= y00.
