Standing waves explain the production of sound by musical instruments and the existence of stationary states (energy levels) in atoms and molecules. Standing waves are set up on a guitar string when plucked, on a violin string when bowed, and on a piano string when struck. They are set up in the air inside an organ pipe, a flute, or a saxophone.
