The impact factor of a journal is calculated based on a rolling two-year period. It can be viewed as the average number of citations in a year given to those papers in a journal that were published during the two preceding years. The median impact factor for business Journals is (N=77) and for management Journals is (N = 89). 2 Cabell s Directory of Publishing Opportunities, online, Management edition. This source gives self-report data from publication outlets regarding their acceptance rate.

5 It is widely cited, and is often used as the statistic of last resort when impact factors are not available. 3 Zickar & Highhouse (2001) report the top ten Journals in industrial- Organizational psychology. The study included 23 Journals , and data came from surveys of 500 Society for Industrial- Organizational Psychology members assessing their stated preferences. Results were separated for psychology and business respondents; the business responses are reported here. Their rankings are indicated on this list by a single digit between 1 and 10. They also report Ranking statistics on other Journals , dividing them into three tiers.

6 Tier 1 Journals offer uniformly high quality. Tier 2 routinely have high quality articles, but the content is uneven. Tier 3 Journals routinely publish article with suspect methodology. Lower scores represent higher prestige. A score close to 2 is acceptable for our very good Journals . 4 Tahai & Meyer (1999) base their results on the frequency of citation of the 65 most cited management Journals in the top 17 management Journals available in the Social Science Citation Index. These top 65 Journals accounted for over 70% of the academic citations available for analysis. Thus, inclusion in the study already suggests that the journal has some influence.

7 The numbers in the table represent the journal s rank. 5 Podsakoff et al. (2005). Their study includes the 28 Journals most frequently included in the previous Ranking studies and additional sub-discipline Journals . For each journal they collected citation data from ISI from 1981 through 1999. They ranked the Journals on total number of citations during that time period (1981-1999) and also ranked average citations per article to adjust for differences in the number of articles published in each journal . The Ranking on the table above is based on citations per article. B. Refereed Journals not included on College of Business Ranking list Descriptions of Journals and acceptance rates.
