3 Order codes:10/TRACE50 Locating a SondeAnew battery or a freshly recharged battery should be usedat the beginning of each day and preferably at the start of ajob. Check that the Sonde and Receiver are operating at thesame frequency and working a quick test for both Sonde and receiver - Position theSonde at a distance equal to its rated Depth range from thereceiver. Point the receiver at the Sonde with its blade in linewith the Sonde and check that the meter reads more than50% at high blade of the receiver must be in line with the Sonde, theopposite to Line the Sonde attatched tothe rod insert it into theDrain or Duct to be located,but keep the just Sonde inview. Hold the receiververtical directly over theSonde with the blade in linewith the the sensitivity of thereceiver to give a meter readingbetween 60% and 80%.ASonde radiates a peak fieldfrom the centre of its axis withghost signals at each side ofthe peak.
4 Move the receiver alittle way to one side and thenalong the axis of the Sondeforwards and backwards todetect the ghost is a good idea to locate the ghost s as finding them positivelyconfirms the position of the main peak. To loose the ghostsreduce the sensitivity of the receiver a little leaving only themain peak the receiver sensitivity set as desired, propel the Sondealong three to four paces and stop. Place the receiver over thesupposed position of the Sonde (a) move the receiver backwardsand forwards with the blade in linewith the Sonde and stop when themeter indicates a clear peak.(b) rotate the receiver as if theblade were a pivot, stop when themeter indicates a clear peak.(c) move the receiver from side toside until the meter indicates aclear (a), (b) and (c) in smallerincrements with the receiverblade resting on or near theground. The receiver should nowbe directly above the Sonde withthe blade in line with the Sonde,mark the the Sonde a further threeto four paces along the drain orduct and pinpoint and this procedure along theroute at similar intervals.
5 It shouldonly be necessary to change thereceiver sensitivity while tracingthe Sonde if the depth of the drainor duct, or the distance betweenreceiver and Sonde Depth to a SondePinpoint the Sonde as previously described and rest thereceiver on the ground and in line with the Sonde. Adjust thesensitivity to give a meter reading of 60% to 80%.If the receiver has a moving coil meter, ensure the needle is inthe red band or on the set line then press and hold the depthkey until a reading is displayed and read off from the the receiver has a Liquid Crystal Display, check receiver is inSonde mode, press the Depth key. The LCD will indicate dEP then give a Depth reading for a few the Depth reading is from the bottom of thereceiver blade to the centre of the Sonde and not to the drainor duct being : Ensure Depth readings are taken at the mainpeak readings taken at the ghost signal positions will the Sonde is too deep for the receiver to display or calculatedepth but there is still enough signal to locate the Sonde andits ghost signals, there is a method of calculating the the Sonde.
6 Movethe receiver in front of theSonde still in line with it,increasing the sensitivityslightly to find the ghostsignal. Between the mainpeak and the ghost thereis a Null or minimum,mark this position. Nowmove behind the Sondeand repeat, find the Nullbetween the ghost andmain peak. See Points A and B on the higher the sensitivityof the receiver thesharper the Null s the distance between points A and B and multiplyby to give an approximate depth Radiodetection Flexrod is used for pushing Sondes intoand along Sewers, Ducts and Drains up to 300m (975ft)It is a Glass Fibre rod in a polypropylene sleeve that isresisitant to abrasion, most solvents, oils and acids.
