In fact, during the earlydays of PC-based word processors, WordPerfect dominated the marketby a large margin. The legal industry demanded a certain feature set,and WordPerfect gave it to them. As time passed, and user requestsmounted, more and more tools were added. At one time, there was aseparate Law Office Edition that contained a collection of pleading toolsto simplify the process of preparing pleading documents.
2 These plead-ing tools have been incorporated into WordPerfect of the topics in this chapter are used extensively in the legal field,but some of them, such as the Table of Contents and the DocumentMap, are utilized on long documents that anyone might , reviewing and marking up documents may sound like some-thing only an attorney would do, but actually, anyone who collaborateson documents and needs to be able to incorporate everyone s changesinto one document will use the Document Review 0789732424 CH18 7/2/04 11:09 AM Page 323 Creating a Table of ContentsA table of contents is a standard addition to long documents to make them easier tonavigate. In most cases, the table of contents contains a list of the headings andsubheadings in the document. You can have up to five different levels in a table ofcontents, so you can actually include four levels below a main steps to create a table of contents are simple:1.

The Legal toolbar has buttons thatyou can use to open dialog boxes. Instead ofthree menu commands, you can click one but-ton. To turn on the Legal toolbar, right-click theWordPerfect toolbar, and then choose Legal fromthe the EntriesWhen you mark an entry for a table of contents,you are telling WordPerfect what you want toappear in the table, as well as where you want itto appear. All you have to do is select the textand pick the level of the table where you want itto appear. Let me give you an example: A mainheading would be Level 1, the first subheadingwould be Level 2, the second subheading wouldbe Level 3, and so on. You can alsoclick the Table of Contentsbutton onthe Legal toolbar (right-click a toolbar,and then choose Legal to view the LegalToolbar).

The hard part is over! Marking text definitely takes the most time the restof the process will seem like a piece of cake! The next step to creating a table of con-tents is defining the table essentially, creating a blank page, typing a title, andtelling WordPerfect exactly where you want the table to define a table of contents1. Create a blank page where you want the table of contents to Type Table of Contentsat the top of the page, and then adjust the font size ifyou like. If you want to center the title, press Shift+F7at the beginning ofthe Click (or press Enter a few times) where you want the first table of contentsentry to Choose Tools, Reference, Table of Contentsto open the Reference Toolsdialog box (refer back to Figure ).

WordPerfect inserts a [Def Mark]code in thedocument. You will see the message <<Table of Contents will generate here>>(see Figure ). 8 If you are so inclined, you cancustomize the table by selecting a different format for the entries. For example, youmight decide to format the first level entries with dot leader page numbers and thesecond level entries with page numbers in parentheses. In the Define Table ofContents dialog box, open the Position drop-down list next to each level and choosethe preferred format. Figure shows the options for a five-level table of contentswith each of the five options chosen: no numbering, page number with text, pagenumber separated by parentheses, page number without dot leaders, and pagenumber with dot leaders. Generating the TableWhen you generate a table of contents, WordPerfect runs through the documentand grabs the text that you ve marked for the table of contents. It inserts that textinto the table of contents page and adds the page number where the text wasfound. It lists theauthorities which are the legal references to other cases, statutes, rules, citations,regulations, amendments, and so on that appear in a legal brief. Keep in mindthat you can use the Table of Authorities feature to create a bibliography for anydocument that requires identification of steps to create a table of authorities are almost identical to the steps to create atable of contents.
10 You mark the entry, define the table, and generate it. Authoritiesare grouped into categories, so you end up marking entries for a certain category,rather than a certain level. A table of authorities is divided into sections; each sec-tion contains one me give you an example: You are creating a table of authorities for a brief thatcontains case citations, statutes, and amendments. The case citations will be in onesection, the statutes in another, and the amendments in a third section. There is nolimit to the number of sections you can you start marking the text, take a minute to sketch out a rough draft of thetable (or bibliography) to get an idea of how many sections you will need and whatthey will be the First AuthorityWhen you mark an entry for a table of authorities, you are telling WordPerfect whatyou want to appear in the table and whereyou want it to appear. The differencebetween a table of authorities and a table of contents is how you mark the most cases, the items you are including in a table of authorities appear severaltimes in the document.
