2 Communications The most efficient way to contact me is through regular email (not Canvas). Please indicate in your email that you are in the Online class. Throughout the semester, I will provide information to you through Canvas announcements. Be sure that you check announcements regularly and set up Canvas to have announcements delivered to you as emails as well. You should also take advantage of the Discussions link here on Canvas. This provides a simple way of communicating with other students in the class. It is particularly useful when looking for information, or providing information to your fellow students that may not be an explicit part of instructions/syllabus ( , issues regarding technology, programs/browsers that you find useful, your experiences in best practices, discussions on course content, etc.) Due dates Due dates for all activities are listed below. Due dates for LearnSmart activities and Quizzes are also shown on the McGraw-Hill Connect site (referred to as MH Connect).

3 Policies for late and missed work The following is a list of penalties for late submissions. Exceptions to these policies will only be provided with fully documented excuses. Within the grading point system, I have built in the ability to miss one 20 point activity with no penalty (see sections below). LearnSmart : No late submissions will be accepted! Quizzes : 50% score reduction for each day late (thus, no submissions accepted after 24 hours) All other work : 20% score reduction for each day late (no submissions after 48 hours) I apologize for the differences between activities, but I am limited my the Online systems. **Any technology issues during Online activities must be documented with screenshots of error messages, etc.** Additional note on due dates Due to the variation in amount and difficulty of content between modules, the amount of time for each module (& sub-module) varies. I have tried to assess the amount of material and adjust the length of time for each activity accordingly.

4 Because there is no set day of the week for deadlines, you will need to pay close attention to due dates for assignments. All material will be due at 11:59 pm on the due date. Furthermore, all material for each Module/Sub-Module is due at the same time (LearnSmart, Quiz, Assignments). This gives you maximum flexibility, but also means that you must budget your time efficiently. You will not have success by starting the materials the evening that it is all due! Course materials & structure The course consists of eleven modules. The material for each module consists largely of textbook reading and video lectures, with supplemental information provided by additional PDFs and websites. The Modules do not, in many cases, simply equate to textbook chapters; the content in each module may consist of sections from different chapters of a related subject. For each module you will do at least one LearnSmart activity and take at least one Online quiz; both of these activities are done through the MH Connect site.

5 There will be seven assignments, which are the Investigations at the end of the textbook chapters, but I have added/modified some material to a couple of these assignments. There will be three "exams" that will consist of two concept sketches. Lastly, you have one group project that you will complete with a group of four students. Each of these activities is discussed in more detail below. Your final grade will be assigned based on the total number of points earned from all of these activities. The point values for each activity are as follows: 280 pts. LearnSmart activities Done through MH Connect (referred to as "Practice" in MH Connect) 260 pts. Online quizzes Done through MH Connect 230 pts. Assignments (7) Available through Canvas Assignments link as pdf (submitted in Canvas) 150 pts. Concept sketch "exams" (3) Available in Canvas Assignments link (submitted in Canvas) Example Concept 80 pts.

Scroll to the bottom of the page for letter-grade assignments Although you can earn 1000 points, I will be calculating your grade based on 980 points. This allows you to miss a single 20 point activity or have a poor grade on one (if you complete all activities, this amounts to extra credit). This is a unique textbook designed to help you learn Earth - Science concepts and processes on your own. Nearly all the information in the book is built around illustrations and photographs, rather than being in long blocks of text. The entire book consists of a series of two-page spreads organized into chapters.

7 Each two-page spread is a self-contained block of information about a specific topic and has a short list indicating what you should be able to do before you leave these pages. The items from these lists, for which you will be held responsible for knowing, are compiled into an "Objectives" or "What-To-Know" list for each module (see below). Required reading for each module is listed within each Module's page here on Canvas, along with the list of objectives in each chapter s What-To-Know List. Although the highlighted yellow text covers many of the important concepts, it is expected that you read the entire sections so that you can answer the questions in the Objectives list (Note that the yellow turns to green once you correctly answer the questions on that material in LearnSmart). Each two-page spread (or section) in the book has a unique number ( , ), and these numbers are referenced for quizzes and other course activities. Each chapter ends with an investigation concerning a problem associated with a virtual place - some of these you will complete as the assignments for this course.

8 Objectives or What-to-Know list At the top of each module here on Canvas is a link to a word file containing the List of objectives for that module (also referred to as the what-to-know list). This list will serve as your guide as to what is important in the module and therefore you should have this list present as you go through your reading, etc. The items are listed by the sections (two-page spreads) in the textbook so it is easy to locate material. This list is derived from the "Before you leave this " at the end of each two-page spread. However, in some cases I have eliminated objectives and in some cases (particularly Module 2) I have added some. This is the material you are expected to know for the quizzes. I have provided the lists for each module as Word files to give you the ability to add spaces and fill in answers. Suggested approach to learning & course activities The following is a suggested approach to going through the material that is most efficient and will provide you with the best chance for success in this course.

9 First, download the Objectives for each module and the Assignment (if there is one for that module). Before beginning LearnSmart, read the required sections that are given on each module page. While you are doing the reading, you should be addressing the objectives, which are clearly tied to each section. In addition, while you are reading you should be making a first attempt on the assignment (again, if there is one for that module) as you encounter the material addressed in the assignment. Once you have done most of the reading, complete the LearnSmart activity. If you have done reading in advance, you will get through the LearnSmart more quickly as you will not have to look up answers. Since there are no stakes because you will get multiple chances to answer any incorrect answers, view the LearnSmart as a practice quiz. Remember, as long as you complete the LearnSmart you will get full credit. Once you feel comfortable with the material, attempt the quiz.

10 As stated on the syllabus, you should not expect to be looking up each answer (this is not LearnSmart!). Instead, you should know most of the answers before attempting the quiz. Remember, as long as you complete the LearnSmart you will get full credit. If you do the activities in this order and with this approach, you will have gained the knowledge to do the assignments and concept sketches. Recall from the syllabus (and announcements) that both of these activities require more in-depth knowledge than the LS and quizzes, including being able to summarize material and tie together multiple concepts. These activities therefore require more thought than the LS and quizzes and therefore more than a cursory reading of the textbook. Through discussions with many students, it seems that students often simply do the LearnSmart and quizzes before doing any reading. This approach will still likely get you full credit for the LearnSmart and reasonable quiz grades.
