Payparticular attention to engine adjustments, tire inflaticn, and February 1980 TOP 2-2-603b. Record the following for each vehicle:(1) Vehicle identification.(2) Type, model, and serial number of each significantcomponent (engine, transmission, etc.).(3) Vehicle loads and weight distribution.(4) Fuel specification/type.(5) Fuel specific gravity.(6) Type of fuel measuring Controlled Tests.
6 Instrument the vehicle to measure fuel consumed,'fuel consumption time, engine speed, road speed, and fuel temperature. Theinstrumentation commonly used consists of a calibrated burette installedwith a special tank to hold the fuel, a timer, an engine tachometer, acalibrated fifth wheel with a speed indicator, and a thermocouple to measurefuel temperature in the burette. Another method involves the use of aflowmeter installed in the fuel Tests Simulating Service Operations. No special instrumentationis required to measure fuel consumption during endurance tests or othertests representative of service operating conditions. To measure fuelconsumed during these tests, carefully make all refills of vehicle fueltanks to the same point. Before the tests are started, select a levelthat will assure no loss in fuel through spillage from vehicle movementor from thermal expansion.

8 5. PERFORMANCE Controlled Tests -Transportation Vehicles. Conduct the followingseries of controlled tests for transportation vehicles (including trans-port, tactical support, and combat vehicles) normally used to transportpersonnel, cargo, or weapon systems. Fuel consumption for these vehiclesis determined on the basis of gear range, road speed, engine speed, andload carried. This category also includes some multifunctional vehicles( , amphibious vehicles) requiring separate fuel consumption measure-ments for each Road-Load Load the vehicle with its rated payload or combat Operate the vehicle at constant speeds over a level, pavedtest course (unless otherwise specified) at not less than four equalincrements of speed over the operating range of the vehicle in each Measure fuel consumed for each speed increment.
