Asstudents engage in Authentic assessmenttasks, they are learning as well as beingassessed. Therefore, the assessmentgoesbeyond being a final evaluation of a givenunit of study; instead, the instruction continues as the students produce work that demonstrates what they know and how they can apply their planning any authenticassessment,we must describe what it is that we want stu-dents to know and be able to do.

8 We maybegin by outlining the geographic issues andconcepts we want them to know, under-stand, and use. Then, we integrate otheressential skills and information from othercontent areas, such as literature, math, sci-ence, and the diagram below illustrates this approachto teaching and assessing an integrated geography Glencoe /McGraw-Hill, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, INTEGRATED GEOGRAPHY PROGRAMWorkHabitsSixEssentialElementsMat hProblemSolvingLiteratureScienceThe ArtsInformationProblemSolvingCommunicati onSkills001-030_AA_878562 2/22/07 3:33 PM Page 12 World Geography and CulturesWe use Authentic Assessment to judgethe quality of a student s responseto an Authentic Assessment Assessment task is designed to combinegeographic concepts with supporting infor-mation (often from other disciplines).
