CHAPTER 9 FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS - eCodes

1 CHAPTER 9 fire PROTECTION SYSTEMSSECTION provisions of this CHAPTER shall specify wherefire PROTECTION systemsare required and shall apply to thedesign, installation, inspection, operation, testing and mainte-nance of allfire PROTECTION Construction code officialshallhave the authority to requireconstruction documentsand cal-culations for allfire PROTECTION systemsand to require permitsbe issued for the installation, rehabilitation or modification ofanyfire PROTECTION documentsforfireprotection systemsshall be submitted for review and approvalprior to system Statement of requesting finalapproval of the installation, where required by thefire codeofficial, the installing contractor shall furnish a writtenstatement to thefire code officialthat the subjectfire protec-tion systemhas been installed in accordance withapprovedplans and has been tested in accordance with the manufac-turer s specifications and the appropriate installation stan-dard.

2 Any deviations from the design standards shall benoted and copies of the approvals for such deviations shallbe attached to the written shall be required as set forth in and PROTECTION systemsshall be maintainedin accordance with the original installation standards for thatsystem. Required SYSTEMS shall be extended, altered or aug-mented as necessary to maintain and continue protectionwhenever the building is altered, remodeled or added PROTECTION systemsshall be done in accordancewith applicable Required fire PROTECTION protectionsystemsrequired by this code or theInternational BuildingCodeshall be installed, repaired, operated, tested and main-tained in accordance with this Nonrequired fire PROTECTION systemor portion thereof not required by thiscode or theInternational Building Codeshall be allowed tobe furnished for partial or complete PROTECTION providedsuch installed system meets the requirements of this codeand theInternational Building Additional fire PROTECTION occupan-cies of a hazardous nature, where special hazards exist inaddition to the normal hazards of the occupancy, or wherethefire code officialdetermines that access for fire appara-tus is unduly difficult, thefire code officialshall have theauthority to require additional safeguards.

3 Such safeguardsinclude, but shall not be limited to, the following: automaticfire detection SYSTEMS , fire alarm SYSTEMS , automaticfire-extinguishing SYSTEMS , standpipe SYSTEMS , or portableor fixed extinguishers. fire PROTECTION equipment requiredunder this section shall be installed in accordance with thiscode and the applicable referenced Appearance of device that has thephysical appearance of life safety or fire PROTECTION equip-ment but that does not perform that life safety or fire protec-tion function shall be Installation acceptance detection andalarm SYSTEMS , fire -extinguishing SYSTEMS , fire hydrant sys-tems, fire standpipe SYSTEMS , fire pump SYSTEMS , private fireservice mains and all otherfire PROTECTION systemsand appurte-nances thereto shall be subject to acceptance tests as containedin the installation standards and asapprovedby thefire codeofficial.

4 Thefire code officialshall be notified before anyrequired acceptance shall be unlawful to occupy any por-tion of a building or structure until the required fire detec-tion, alarm and suppression SYSTEMS have been tested Inspection, testing and detection,alarm and extinguishing SYSTEMS shall be maintained in anoperative condition at all times, and shall be replaced orrepaired where defective. Nonrequiredfire PROTECTION systemsand equipment shall be inspected, tested and maintained PROTECTION systemsshall beinspected, tested and maintained in accordance with the ref-erenced standardslistedin Table PROTECTION system MAINTENANCE STANDARDSSYSTEMSTANDARDP ortable fire extinguishersNFPA 10 Carbon dioxide fire -extinguishing systemNFPA 12 Halon 1301 fire -extinguishing systemsNFPA 12 ADry-chemical extinguishing systemsNFPA 17 Wet-chemical extinguishing systemsNFPA 17 AWater-based fire PROTECTION systemsNFPA 25 fire alarm systemsNFPA 72 Water-mist systemsNFPA 750 Clean-agent extinguishing systemsNFPA of all system inspections.

8 The impair-ment coordinator shall implement the steps outlined in Sec-tion Restoring SYSTEMS to impairedequipment is restored to normal working order, the impair-ment coordinator shall verify that all of the following proce-dures have been implemented:1.
