1 Creative Dyeing Workshop Supply List Lisa Halter This class will cover both Gradation Dyeing and Textural Dyeing techniques. We will dye the cotton fabrics in class and instructions will be given for the washout at home. For Gradation Dyeing - Learn how to dye cotton fabrics using Procion MX dyes (mixed into a liquid). You will learn how to dye fabric in a gradation of one color and a gradation of two or more colors. The Gradation Dyeing process creates dye-lots by changing the amount of dye proportions to vary the colors and shading of fabric . For Textural Dyeing - Learn how to add texture to your hand dyed fabrics. Explore some shibori techniques, using props and string to add something exciting to your dyed fabrics. Possible activities include folding methods, wrapping fabric around a pole with string, and making "popcorn" fabric with beads and string. Procion Mx Dyes, Soda Ash, Urea, Synthrapol, Retayne, fabric are available at Pacific Fabrics.
2 Dress in old clothes that can get dyes on them. Latex gloves and forks will be provided. Snip and Tear fabric to desired size before class, if possible. Long pieces are fun because they are scarf-like. Dyeing Supply List: 3 to 12 yards of 100% cotton fabric , PFD or prewashed and dried with no fabric softener. Not necessary to iron the fabric . Each step of a gradation needs its own piece of fabric and bag. o The full spectrum (rainbow) gradation recipe will need 20 different pieces of fabric (5 yards of fabric , if you want fat quarters). Bring more for playing with mixing colors. o The preparation by manipulating fabric takes some time, so less fabric than the gradation class is needed. o You can choose between PFD (prepared for Dyeing ) fabric that is ready right off the bolt or some other cotton fabric white or muslin. o If you are using non-PFD fabric , prewash your fabric with a capful of Synthrapol and cup of soda ash.
3 This will remove anything the manufacturer used to finish the fabric . (Since our area has very soft water, I tend to use less detergent than the box says. I have adjusted the amounts to reflect that.) A Permanent pen (sharpie). To label your fabric . Gallon Size Freezer Ziploc bags (For gradation Dyeing , you need one bag for each dye-lot step in the gradation, 18-35 bags. A separate bag for each color variation is needed to make the dye-lots) No zipper type bags, they leak. 3 or 4 colors of Procion MX dyes. Starting colors are often fuchsia, turquoise, and lemon yellow. Pick colors you want to try. They will come as a powder and will be mixed into a liquid. Soda Ash. (Sodium Carbonate). Table Salt, non-iodized. Urea 4 to 6 plastic or rubber dish bins. Need at least one that you can lay a 14 inch PVC pipe horizontal. Restaurant clean-up bins work great (they re inexpensive at Costco) Containers o Wide mouth Quart containers with lids.
4 Bring one per dye color you are using for the mixed liquid dyes. o 2 One Gallon containers with lids. One will be used for water and one will be used for the soda ash-salt solution. Need to be able to pour liquid. Milk jugs work well for the short term. o Some kind of container to be used for soaking texture prepared fabrics in the soda ash-salt solution before Dyeing . Measuring Cups and Spoons (Any tools used for Dyeing should be designated as non-food items) (2 cup liquid measure, cup dry measure, 1 Tbsp, Tbsp, 1 tsp, tsp) If you are able, bend spoons forward so they look like gravy ladles. Breathing Mask. To be worn when we are measuring the powder dyes. Plastic Forks, Chopsticks or small whisks to mix liquid dyes. (I will provide forks to use) Funnel Scissors For snipping fabric for tearing. Additional Supplies Some are needed after the class. Synthrapol Used to prepare non-pfd fabrics prior to class and to wash out excess dyes from fabric , at home the day after class Retayne or Other dye fixative Used after washing out excess dyes to fix dyes to fabric .
5 Supplies for Creating Texture. Creating texture takes additional time to prepare. Simple texturing methods will be discussed. All items must be able to be immersed in water. PVC piping. A 1 inch diameter pvc pipe, 12 or 14 inches long. Needs to be able to lie flat in one of your containers. Rubber bands 3 or 4 balls of White Perle Cotton, size 12 or 8. Plastic beads . Pony beads work well. Small squeeze bottles with lids, optional Containers with lids that can be used to tightly shove your fabric and dye solutions into, 16 or 32 ounce dairy containers. Pairs of Small Wooden blocks to be used for clamping folded fabric . A large container with a lid to layer several fabrics (I use a giant pretzel container) Heavy Duty Foil to make a trough Plastic Wrap to cover open bin for transport Anything else you want to try to use to create texture Optional Supplies Additional Fabrics/White T-Shirts. different grades of fabric , white on white, fabric to overdye, poly-cotton mixed fabric .
6 T-Shirts to add to your bag of liquid dye. White cotton dish towels. Other kind of gloves if allergic to latex Not Recommended Hefty Zipper Bags (they leak a little) Cheapy Breathing Masks (the elastic pulls out) All materials may be purchased at Pacific Fabrics with a 10% discount.
