2 Results: The mainDE were: Risk of infection (100%), Impaired physical mobility (50,7%), Altered nutrition: less than the corporeal needs (44,7%), self-caredeficit (43,4%), impaired skin integrity (41,8%). La poblaci n estuvo constituida por los instrumentos de recolecci n de datos de enfermer a en el per odo de junio a diciembre del2000. Resultados: Los principales DE fueron: Riesgo p/ infecci n (100%), Movilidad f sica perjudicada (50,7%), Nutrici n alterada:menos que las necesidades corp reas (44,7%), d ficit en el autocuidado (43,3%), integridad de la piel perjudicada (41,8%).

The inversion of the populationpyramid will bring about profound transformations inthe social-economic-political-cultural structure of society,which will directly influence the health sector. The increasein chronic and degenerative problems will cause a highdegree of disability, which will require aid and supportfrom qualified a specialty, Geriatric nursing has developed recentlyand is based on knowledge of the aging process for thebio-psycho-social-cultural and spiritual valuation of elderlypeople s needs.

9 Service organization and theoreticalconcepts guide practice, data collection, nursing Diagnosis ,planning and maintenance of care, intervention,assessments, multi-professional collaboration, research,ethics and professional development as its standards ofquality. Therefore, the usage of nursing CareSystematization (NCS) is a worldwide need for the qualityof its interest in discovering the main nursing diagnosesfor elderly inpatients originated from clinical practiceduring the first year of the residence specialization coursein Geriatric nursing , and from the need to standardizethe NCS in order to facilitate, promote and elaborateproper health care for elderly * Identifying the main nursing diagnoses for elderlyinpatients admitted to the Geriatric wing of a Universityhospital.

10 * Proposing nursing interventions for the retrospective study was performed at the geriatricwing of a university hospital in S o Paulo City. The studypopulation comprised elderly inpatients, who had theirNCS registry sheet filled out between June andDecember/2000. Secondary data were used, obtainedfrom data collection instruments and from nursingdiagnoses, after being approved by the Research EthicsCommittee at S o Paulo Federal University. The modelused for the data collection instrument was created by agroup of nursing professionals who were specialists inGerontology(2).
