NeumannFrontmatterMore informationAcknowledgmentsThis book started as a rather loose conversation among the threeeditors about the future of Diplomacy . Our plan was to explore thediplomatic work being done by a host of different types of actors.

9 Weassembled a team of authors for an initial workshop, financed by theCentre for International Peace and Security Studies (CIPSS) at McGillUniversity in Montreal in March 2011 and organized by VincentPouliot. Generousfinancial support from Kjetil M. Stuland, formerchairman of the board at the Norwegian Institute of InternationalAffairs (NUPI), enabled us to organize what turned out to be a highlysignificant second workshop at the New School University in NewYork City in September 2012. Tarak Barkawi, then at the NewSchool, made all of this practically possible by Making conferencefacilities and logistical support available. Through two days ofintense and highly productive discussions, we expanded the scopeand rationale of our project to bring social theory to bear ondiplomacy, and to bring Diplomacy to the core of debates aboutworld Politics . At the New School workshop, we received extremelyproductive feedback from Marcus Holmes, Frederic Merand, andCarne Ross on the overall direction of the project as well as onindividual chapters.
