1 EDUCATING THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALSH ealthOF TOMORROW Sciences ISSUE 01 WELCOME I am delighted to welcome faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the School of health Sciences to our inaugural newsletter. This annual newsletter will provide updates to what s happening currently and what is planned for the future. Faculty have been busy writing grants, publishing in leading professional journals, and presenting at conferences, certification and licensure pass rates are consistently amongst the highest in New York, classroom and skills labs have been updated with the most current technology, and we continue to attract the best and brightest students that Long Island has to offer. In addition to new program development, Nursing and Dental Hygiene have been approved to offer online degree completion programs, and Dental Hygiene has been approved to offer the entry level baccalaureate degree. Finally, I continue to be exceptionally proud of the accomplishments of our alumni, many of whom have moved on to leadership positions in HEALTHCARE throughout Long Island, and the nation.

2 Dr. Denny Ryman, Dean NURSING DEPARTMENT NEWS Dr. Kathleen Cino, Chairperson STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS Carly Vittoria and Jessica Daddino were recipients of the Chancellor s Award for Excellence FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE NURSING DEPARTMENT The nursing department continues to grow and develop. Of note is the student mentor program for local middle school students, the RN-BS community students outreach to underserved populations of Long Island to increase self-care asthma management, and the large scale investment in simulation technology to fully educate our pre licensure students. Chancellor s Award for Faculty Service was awarded to Dr. Susan Barrett- Landau. Three faculty earned their doctoral degree: Dr Christine Glaser is a Doctor of health Education (DHed) December 18, 2016 from AT Still University. Her dissertation was entitled Nurses Attitudes Toward Death and Dying.

3 Dr. Nancy Maggio earned a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, in May, 2017 Dr. Maria Nikolaidou received a Doctor of health Education (DHed) from AT Still University on December 18, 2016. Her dissertation was entitled Promoting Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors in RN-BS Completion Students Lynn Johnson was elected Nursing Alliance For Quality Care (NAQC) Vice-Chair, Board of Directors appointed by American college of Nurse Midwives. NAQC is a national nursing alliance with a mission to advance the highest quality, safety, and value of consumer-centered health care for all individuals-patients, their families, and their communities Jennifer Bryer is a grant reviewer for American Nurses Foundation, May 30, 2016 - June 1, 2017 RN-BS DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM It is a pleasure to announce that the nursing department is going online! In 2017, Middle states approved Farmingdale State college to offer a fully online RN-BS completion program.

4 The SUNY system approved the plan in 2017 and it is in review at the State Education Department. The RN BS online program has been in development by Dr Maria Nikolaidou, Dr Mary Stedman, Dr Fran Cherkis, and COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Outreach Committee participated in ten community based venues which were related to the provision of the flu vaccine, health education, hypertension screening or diabetes risk assessment to community members: St. Catherine s Hospital (10/15/16) Kemp Hannon Golden Gathering (10/6/16) Senator Venditto s Golden Gathering [NuHealth and Nassau Dept. of health ] (Freeport) (10/20/16) Senator Todd Kaminsky s Annual Golden Gathering (Rockville Centre) (10/21/16) Heart Screen New York (10/29/16) Give Kids a Smile (2/3/17). Blood pressure screenings performed for attendees at the annual Give Kids a Smile event sponsored by the department of Dental Hygiene. Heart Screen. Half Hollow Hills East High School. Event screened over 583 middle and high school students.

5 (3/25/17) Farmingdale Community Summit Expo & health Fair. Blood pressure screenings performed for community members, children and adults. (3/29/17) Professor Lynn Johnson, current members of the BS Online Committee. Maya Bentz, Senior Instructional Designer in Distance Learning joined the committee in 2016. Maya contributed great energy and expertise to the committee process. The courses for online offering are in development and nursing faculty are developing expertise in online teaching The RN to BS completion students will be fully supported with department online orientation, advisement, tutoring, as well as the full range of Farmingdale State college services when the program begins. SIMULATION LAB The nursing lab continues to update equipment, facilities and supplies in 2016-2017 in order to improve student learning, confidence, and preparation for the hospital environment. The department purchased 1 Workstation on Wheels (WOW), 5 Alaris infusion pumps and 1 patient lift this past year.

6 Improvements to the simulation program were made with the purchase of the One Room Audiovisual system, installed in summer 2016. The SIM One system was incorporated into the curriculum in 2016-17. PUBLICATIONS Frances Cherkis published in Morton s Critical Care: Wolters Kluwer (2017). She also published Mind Mapping: An South Huntington Union Free School District s health & Wellness Fair. Blood pressure screenings performed for community members, children and adults. (3/30/17) Wyandanch health & Careers Fair at Martin Luther King Elementary School. Asthma education provided to elementary school students and their parents in cooperation with the Asthma Coalition of Long Island. (4/27/17) Active Classroom Learning Strategy, on the QSEN Website in 2016.
