Transcription of ELASTIC CLOUD STORAGE (ECS) FOR ARCHIVING
SOLUTION OVERVIEW ELASTIC CLOUD STORAGE (ECS) FOR ARCHIVING Tiering to the CLOUD NOT ALL DATA IS CREATED EQUAL The capacity of a digital archive is ever growing and with aging data becoming less valuable over time, it s imperative for organizations to design a tiered archive approach that fits the needs specific to their industry. STORAGE tiering can be defined by the process in which aged, inactive data is moved from highly performant yet more expensive Tier 1 resources over to a lower cost form of STORAGE media. This process is purely driven by economics in an attempt to lower STORAGE costs and optimize existing infrastructure resources.
Organizations today want tiering to be fully automated and managed by the policies that they set being that it s a complex, reoccurring activity that requires different levels of performance, protection, etc. CHOOSING THE RIGHT ARCHIVING APPROACH There are four main approaches to ARCHIVING : in-place (passive archive), archive via backup, active archive, and long term preservation archive. The first approach is a completely passive, do nothing, approach where stale data is simply allowed to stay on primary STORAGE . Obviously this is a very expensive and wasteful solution since more and more primary STORAGE needs to be purchases to accommodate the capacity consumed by these stale data.
The second option is to just use backup copies to also act as data archives. This is attractive as backup assets are leveraged for a second operation but the data may or may not be readily accessible, isn't instantly ready of analytics or eDiscovery and likely won t be regulatory compliant. A very popular third option is to set up an active-archive tier. This is a secondary tier of STORAGE that inactive data is migrated to from the expensive primary or first tier STORAGE . Data may be cycled back to primary based on policies and may also live in the active archive for a longer period of time.
The final tier of ARCHIVING is often called Deep Archive or Frozen Archive but is a STORAGE tier designed for Long-Term Preservation. This tier is characterized by high scalability to hundreds of Petabytes or more, extremely low cost, robust data protection, regulatory compliant capable and high operational efficiencies. DELL EMC ELASTIC CLOUD STORAGE (ECS) Dell EMC ELASTIC CLOUD STORAGE (ECS) is a simple, massively scalable CLOUD - STORAGE platform that combines efficient multi-site data protection with multiple access methods to help organizations build a central archive repository that can address all of their ARCHIVING and long-term data retention needs.
ECS is a software-defined object platform that s built from the ground up using commodity hardware to deliver an infinitely scalable platform at a very low cost archive that stays within the confines of your own data center. TIERING TO THE CLOUD Figure 1. Dell EMC provides seamless tiering from primary STORAGE to ECS providing an active-archive CLOUD platform. END-TO-END ARCHIVE TIERING SOLUTION ECS features the ease of use and fast time to provision STORAGE for archival content that the public CLOUD provides without the headaches such as high data retrieval cost and data residency, security, and compliance concerns.
ECS can manage object, file, and HDFS workloads eliminating the need of having separate STORAGE platforms for each. Deliver in place analytics to geo-distributed archived content to extract business intelligence with less resources and a quicker time to results than traditional HDFS implementations. ECS also very uniquely provides metadata management and search adding richer meaning to the archival data to enable easier, contextual retrieval. Benefits of tiering to ECS include: Flexible and Scalable ECS is available as a software-only solution as well as a fully integrated appliance to provide organizations the ability to start small and scale to Petabyte size for their archival needs.
Eliminates STORAGE Silos Store, manage, and interact with your archival data in any file format. ECS supports industry standard object API s (OpenStack Swift, Amazon S3, Dell EMC Atmos and CAS), file (NFSv3), and Hadoop distributions (Cloudera, Hortonworks, and Pivotal) all on the same platform. Easy Access and Manageability Features a multi-site, active-active architecture that supports millions of users and applications from a single global namespace. Manage your geographically distributed environment anywhere, anytime, and on any device. Geo-Protection Through patent pending technology, ECS efficiently distributes and stores data across geographies with a unique approach that maximize STORAGE utilization with minimal overhead.
Geo-Protection with Low STORAGE Overhead Through a patent pending hybrid encoding methodology, ECS provides best-of-breed STORAGE efficiency with STORAGE overhead as low as with support for up to eight sites. ECS can handle disk, node, and even a total data center failure so there s no tradeoff between file access and efficiency. Low Cost Archives ECS delivers up to a 65% lower TCO when compared to the public CLOUD STORAGE providers. With Dell EMC, managing data archives is easy and frees up STORAGE on your production systems and your budget to work on more priority initiatives.
