Theycan be used to control flow direction and rate. Directionalcontrol is achieved by solenoid selection; flow rate is afunction of the solenoid current. The valve spool will returnto center position if electrical power is metering spools (code "C") meter oil intoand out of the hydraulic actuator. These spools provideexcellent control in most applications. The combinationmetering spools are highly recommended for motor circuitsto provide back pressure in either direction.

3 This backpressure provides system stiffness that is required foroptimum control. Combination metering spools can beused with a pressure-compensated module to provideproportional pressure compensated spools (code "I") meter oil into the actuator. Thisspool can be used in applications where the actuator isalways working against a positive (resistive) load. Meter-inspools can be used with a pressure compensated spools (code "O") meter flow out of the spools are commonly used in applications with "runaway" loads such as over-center loads. Also, meter-outspools would be used with high ratio is important to properly size a proportional valve toachieve good resolution. A common mistake in specifyingproportional valves is selecting a spool with too high a ratedflow capacity (low P).

4 The results may be poor control ofthe actuator, particularly with respect to velocity andresolution. The ideal valve size usually is one that providesjust enough maximum flow capability to achieve the desiredvelocity. Consult with Continental about special meteringcharacteristics: unequal-metering, step metering, othernominal flows and other spool caution when applying a separate internally-drainedpressure control valve between the actuator and propor-tional valve. Back pressure created by meter-out orcombination metering proportional valves can add to thespring load of the pressure control valve, resulting in achange of the control pressure :1. Response times are effected by pressure, viscosity & flow Data taken with oil temperature @ 120 F (49 C) and viscosity @ 100 SUS, inlet pressure @ 1000 psi using Continental Hydraulics ECM4 electronic Drain Port (Y) must be connected solely to tank below fluid level.
