Elementary Particles in Physics
Six types of quarks have been identified (Table 2). As with the leptons, there is no understanding of the extreme hierarchy of quark masses. For each type of quark there is a corresponding antiquark. Baryons are bound states of three quarks (e.g., proton = uud; neutron = udd), while mesons consist of a quark and an antiquark.
