Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) clark College's EMT Program is for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the Medical field with a focus on pre-hospital Emergency care. 2 This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under Medical oversight. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The EMT is a link from the scene to the Emergency health care system. EMT Certification Gateway Gaining a certification as an EMT can be a fulfilling lifelong career as well as a stepping stone or gateway to many other avenues in the Medical field. After becoming an EMT and with some experience in the field, it is common to advance to higher levels of training, such as Paramedic. Paramedic training requires additional and extensive training in Advanced Life Support.

Career opportunities include working in fast-paced, high call volume 911 systems, such as private ambulance companies, fire departments, and hospitals, as well as integrated Medical support for industrial wilderness, and other challenging environments. 4 Firefighter EMTs have specialized training in fire suppression and prevention. However, over 80% of 911 calls in the fire service require Medical care to be provided in addition to performing fire and rescue operations, which is why you must have an EMT certification to work as a firefighter. During fire season, many firefighter EMTs are called to fight wildland fires. Emergency Departments hire EMTs to work in the ED. 7 Communicate effectively and professionally, using verbal, non-verbal, and written language with patients, colleagues, the public, diverse populations, and other healthcare providers. Model professional behaviors and make appropriate decisions guided by ethical principles and core values. Perform Emergency assessment and treatment procedures, observing, recording, and reporting the patient s condition to the receiving facility.
