PURPOSE AND MANUAL is designed to serve asa general reference on ENGINEER organization.

6 It covers themission, classification, organization, equipment, armament,and training of ENGINEER units. 2. troops are classified as combatunits or service units in accordance with Circular No. Department, 1942,a. Combat (l) Combat units are those whosefunctions require close contact with the enemy. They includegeneral ENGINEER and some special ENGINEER units attached orassigned to divisions, corps, and armies. They receive exten-sive combat and tactical training.(2) ENGINEER headquarters of corps and higher units, includ-ing all bases and defense commands, are in the combat Service units are those whosefunctions are characterized by service activities rather thancombat.

7 They include some general ENGINEER and a majorityof special ENGINEER units attached to corps and higher head-quarters. They are organized, trained, and equipped to do themore technical and permanent ENGINEER work. Service unitsreceive less extensive combat and tactical training than com-bat units. 3. Army of the United States is dividedInto Army Ground Forces, Army Air Forces, and Army ServiceForces. Regardless of where or with what units they are serv-ing, ENGINEER troops generally are identified with one of thesethree forces, as shown in the following FIELD MANUALU 4. ENGINEER UNITS, COMBAT, WITH GROUND Engi-feer combat battalion is an organic part ofthe infantry division.

8 It consists of a headquarters, headquar-ters and service company, three lettered companies, and amedical detachment. It is completely motorized, includingtransportation for all ENGINEER combat battalion, nondivisional (attached tocorps or army).-This unit is organized, trained, and equippedthe same as the ENGINEER combat battalion of the infantrydivision. The number of battalions attached to corps and armydepends upon the ENGINEER squadron. This squadron is an organic part ofthe cavalry division. It consists of a headquarters, headquar-ters and service troop, two lettered troops, and a medical de-tachment. It is completely motorized, including transportationfor all Armored ENGINEER battalion is an organicpart of the armored division.
