This victory is dependentupon the readiness of thepersonnel aboard. Each individual is assigned tasksto perform to satisfy theneeds of ttship. The information in this manual relates to tasksrequired tomeet shipboard needs -tasks that are assigned to personnelaboard ship,serving as a Machinist's Mate First Class and Chief Machinist'sMate. This ratetraining manual covers the duties requiredefficiently operate and main-tam ship propulsion machinery and associatedequipment and to maintainapplicable records and reports so that the ship willbe able to perform itsassigned mission.

4 It is only whenwe have ,nrsonnel aboard who can and doperform these tasks efficiently thatwe will have each ship operating at a highstate of readiness and contributing to victory When you are assignedduties aboard ship as an MM I or MMC,you will be expected to know theinformation contained in this manual. With eachadvancement, you accept an increasing respon-sibilityinmilitarymatters and inmattersrelating to the occupational requirements of theMachinist's Mate will find that your responsibilities formilitary leadership are about the same as thoseof petty officers in other ratings, since everypetty officer is a military person as well as responsibilities fortechnical leadership are special to your ratingand are directly related to the nature of yourwork.
