1 Installation InstructionsSoffitThese Instructions describe and illustrate the stepsinvolved in installing CertainTeed siding and trim. 2 You can use solid vinyl panels or perforated vinyl panelsfor Soffit installations. Perforated panels provide ventila-tion, which helps to reduce heat buildup in the summerand ice dams in the winter. In buildings with roof ridgevents, you should install ventilated Soffit . Check localbuilding codes to determine the amount of ventilationrequired. In high windload areas, you should also checklocal building codes to determine if the application meth-ods that are required differ from those described below. The procedure used to install Soffit depends on theconstruction of the eaves: Open eaves eaves with exposed rafters or trusses are typical of new construction.

3 You will also have touse open eave Installation procedures if you have toremove damaged Soffit at a remodeling project. Enclosed eaves eaves with Soffit in place are typical of remodeling over Open EavesThe first step in installing Soffit is to install the properreceiving channels. You have several options forreceiving channels. You can use accessories such as F- channel or J- channel , or you can make channels usingcoil stock. The best approach is to select a method thatworks most effectively with the construction techniquesused to create the eave. Examine figures 1-4 and findthe one that most closely resembles the constructionmethods used on your particular project.

4 If no F- channel is available, J- channel can be modifiedto create F- channel . Simply cut slots (as shown in figure5) in the nail flange area where it would be nailed to thewall. 5 Nail the channels every 16",positioning the nail in the center of the slot. Do not nailtightly. If you re using Beaded T2" panel as Soffit , nailboth the channel and the Soffit every 8"-12" to createadded support. If the eave span is greater than 16", you will have toinstall nailing strips (as shown in figure 4) and install the receiving channels on the nailing the Soffit will turn a corner, cut and install the channel sothere is 1/4" for expansion at each of the adjoining walls. 6 Mark this dimension on asoffit panel and cross cut the panel using a powercircular saw with a reversed fine-tooth blade. Cut one or two panels at a time, carefully advancing the sawthrough the the panel into the channel on the wall, then intothe channel at the fascia board. You may have to flex the panel slightly to insert it into the second certain the panel is perpendicular to the wall, then nail. 7 This is one of the rare instanceswhen face nailingis a Soffit panelis face-nailed, itwill expand only in one direction inthis case, towardthe receivingchannel. Be sureto leave space forthe full expansionallowance in thereceiving channel . If you re using a nailing strip (as in figure 4), do not nailtightly allow movement for installing the panels by locking and nailing thesoffit in place. Make certain Soffit panels are fully lockedalong their entire a CornerTo turn a corner, measure from the channel at the wallcorner to the channel at the corner of the fascia 1/4" for expansion.

8 If necessary, install nailingstrips to provide backing forthe lineal. Cut and installsoffit double channel linealor H-bar (see figure 7). Miterthe corner Soffit panels andinstall as described above. Completing the InstallationTo complete the Installation , apply utility trim and fastenaluminum fascia cap or formed aluminum coil stock withpainted trim nails. If you must face nail fascia, drill holesfor the trim nails to allow for expansion and to reducedenting of the over Enclosed EavesIf the existing Soffit isrotted or damaged,it s best to remove itcompletely beforeinstalling vinyl use theinstructions for open eaves.

9 If you re installingperforated soffitpanels and theexisting Soffit doesn thave openings forventilation, cut anadequate number of openings. Thencomplete theinstallation asdescribed for open procedure used to install Soffit over an enclosedeave is almost identical to that used for an open major difference is the Installation of the the method you ll use to install Soffit at thefascia board (see figures 8 and 9). When installing J- channel at either the wall or the fascia board, nail the J- channel every 12"-16".Turning a CornerIf the Soffit is to turn a corner, cut and install J-channelso there is 1/4" for expansion at each of the adjoiningwalls and adjoining fascia boards.
