1 United StatesDepartment ofAgricultureFact SheetLivestock Assistance Grant ProgramAugust 2006 OverviewThe Department of Agricul-ture (USDA) farm Service Agen-cy s (FSA) Livestock Assistance Grant Program (LAGP) provides $50 million in state block grants to help Livestock producers partially recover forage production losses due to certain drought conditions during 2006. Livestock producers in certain drought-affected states may be eligible for the Program . A complete list of eligible states and counties is posted at: Section 32 of the Act of Aug. 24, 1935, authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture to distribute the funds to re-establish farmers purchas-ing power.

2 FSA will distribute LAGP funds to eligible Eligibility and RoleTo be eligible for LAGP funds, a state must have a county that meets LAGP eligibility require-ments (See Eligible Counties). Eligible states will receive LAGP funds after entering into Memo-randums of Understanding with FSA. The amount of money distributed to eligible states will be based on the number of adult beef cattle and sheep in eligible coun-ties in each state as determined by USDA s National Agricultural Statistics Service . Application procedures for live-stock forage production loss funds will be determined by each state.

3 Each state will distribute funds through its own Program . Eligible CountiesProducers of Livestock who suf-fered forage production losses in an eligible county may be eligible for payment. To be eligible, a county must have experienced exceptional drought (Category D4 Drought on the Drought Monitor) or extreme drought (D3 level) during March 7, 2006, to Aug. 31, 2006. A complete list of eligible states and counties is posted at: Eligibility Additional provisions related to Assistance are: Only producers of Livestock who suffered forage production losses in eligible counties may receive payments.

4 Assistance may be provided for such things as the cost of lost forage, supplemental feeding, the cost of relocating Livestock to new feed supplies, increased feed transportation cost and the cost of emergency water amount of aid received by a Livestock producer may not exceed the amount of forage production and related losses suffered as a result of drought in LimitationsA Livestock producer may receive a maximum of $10,000 from his or her state s block Grant Program . Sign-upStates will conduct a sign-up for their respective programs and inform producers of the sign-up period.
