profile of NEDO Since it was established in 1980, NEDO has become one of the largest public research and development management organizations in Japan and has worked with the government to promote economic and industrial policies. In this role, NEDO undertakes technology development and demonstration activities to carry out two basic missions, addressing energy and global environmental problems and enhancing industrial technology, by integrating the combined efforts of industry, academia, and government. Regarding our first mission of addressing energy and global environmental problems, NEDO has been supporting the energy and environmental fields for more than 30 years.

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the promotion of renewable energy and energy conservation has become extremely important. Going forward, NEDO will continue to support technology development for achieving even higher efficiency and lower cost, with a primary goal of developing new technologies and ensuring that project results are introduced to the market. NEDO s second mission is to enhance the level of industrial technology, an extremely important undertaking considering the difficult conditions Japan is currently facing. In order to put new technologies to practical use and commercialize them for their introduction to society, now more than ever there is an increasing need for open innovation.

NEDO will continue to play a key role as a catalyst for collaboration between industry, academia, and government by promoting exchanges of knowledge and ideas between private sector companies, universities, and public research institutes in a coordinated manner. Furthermore, our Technology Strategy Center was established in April 2014 to support carrying out our two missions. It formulates technology development strategies by conducting research studies, and plans and proposes new projects which incorporate its strategies. NEDO has also constructed a framework to help create innovation. For example, our project manager system is being used not only to improve management capabilities but also to enhance NEDO s role as an intermediary to facilitate the commercialization of innovative technology seeds.

NEDO aims to increase the awareness of technology development strategies in society and also stimulate and support business-driven innovation through technology development, thereby accelerating economic growth. In response to a recent increase in open and global innovation, NEDO has been actively promoting international demonstration projects in Europe, North America, and Asian countries. The projects aim at establishment of world standard technology as well as market development by drawing on established research networks in collaboration with foreign governments and relevant organizations.

Through these efforts, NEDO believes that Japan s advanced energy, robotics, and other technologies can be disseminated worldwide so as to contribute to the resolution of global environmental and social issues. Fiscal year 2017 is the last year of NEDO s Third Five-Year Plan. NEDO will endeavor to achieve the goals of its current five-year plan, prepare a comprehensive assessment of the results, and reflect the results in preparing the next five-year plan. In order to stimulate economic and industrial policies in cooperation with the Japanese government, NEDO will continue to fulfill its duty to contribute to the international community by producing innovation through industry-academia-government collaboration and achieving results in a timely has a unique technological capabilityNew Energy and Industrial Technology Development OrganizationChairman Kazuo Furukawa NEDO s MissionsAddressing energy and global environmental problemsNEDO actively undertakes the development of new energy ( , photovoltaic, wind power.)

Through these efforts, NEDO promotes greater utilization of new energy and improved energy conservation. NEDO also contributes to a stable energy supply and the resolution of global environmental problems by promoting the demonstration of new energy, energy conservation, and environmental technologies abroad based on knowledge obtained from domestic industrial technologyWith the aim of raising the level of industrial technology, NEDO pursues research and development of advanced new technology.

Drawing on its considerable management know-how, NEDO carries out projects to explore future technology seeds as well as mid- to long-term projects that form the basis of industrial development.
