I am a licensed California Architect, Chair of the COC Architecture & Interior design program and a LEED Accredited Professional with specialty in Building design & Construction (LEED AP BD&C). Upon successful completion of this series of two-week courses ( units total), you ll be prepared for the LEED Green Associate accreditation exam as well as being eligible to apply for a Certificate of Specialization in Sustainable design & Development from college of the Canyons. Many students register for ONLINE courses believing they will require less time than a traditional face-to-face class.

2 While you will definitely benefit by not having to travel to campus at specific meeting times for these classes, the discipline and responsibility necessary for completing an ONLINE COURSE is entirely on your shoulders (so you will need to schedule time each week for viewing the ONLINE lectures and completing the required homework & exams on-time). In reality, ONLINE courses sometimes require a greater commitment of your time & focus than a traditional COURSE , so I commend you for being up to the challenge and look forward to hearing of your success in acquiring this important professional credential. Indoor environmental health considerations such as indoor air quality, ventilation, interior lighting & acoustical quality will also be introduced. ARCHT 088 Innovation in design and Regional Priorities Section - 31788 Start date: 03/19/18 End date: 03/31/18 Units .5 COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduces innovative sustainable building design strategies, emphasizing emerging trends that address pressing regional environmental issues. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME (SLO) Explain sustainable design strategies, technologies and documentation process involved in pursuing LEED Innovation in design credits.

5 ARCHT 089 Green Building Economics Section - 31789 Start date: 04/09/18 End date: 04/21/18 Units .5 COURSE DESCRIPTION Provides strategies on the application of economic principles to asses and balance the competing environmental and resource demands involved in the construction of the built environment. Factors analyzed will include the waste assimilation capacity of the environment, resource decision making based on market economy, building efficiency and life cycle-cost analysis. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME (SLO) Assess various financial, technical, and environmental factors that influence the economic viability and limitations for sustainable design and green building elements. ARCHT 090 LEED ONLINE Documentation and Processing Section - 31790 Start date: 04/23/18 End date: 05/05/18 Units .5 COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduces students to LEED ONLINE , the internet based interface for submitting credit compliance information to the Green Building Certification Institute for a project s prospective LEED certification.

6 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME (SLO) Apply the key elements used to calculate LEED points & complete application forms for submittal to USGBC for various LEED credits. ARCHT 091 Green Building Control Systems Section - 31791 Start date: 05/07/18 End date: 05/19/18 Units 1 COURSE DESCRIPTION Presents the efficient use and conservation of energy resources for environmental control systems in green buildings, including heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting. Topics include the use of automated solar control, cross and stack ventilation, daylighting methods and an introduction to mechanical systems for interior environment control in green buildings. Emphasis on sustainable building technology use in the design of environmental control systems. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME (SLO) Analyze the use of various green building environmental control systems. ARCHT 095 LEED Green Associate Test Prep Section - 31792 Start date: 05/21/18 End date: 05/31/18 Units.

7 5 COURSE DESCRIPTION Prepares students for the LEED Green Associate exam through a structured program that includes introduction to studying methodologies, test taking strategies and in-class practice testing. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME (SLO) - Develop a LEED Green Associate Study Plan. Page 3 of 3 This class will utilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to complete our COURSE requirements including discussions, grades, and other COURSE activities (note that only students registered for each COURSE will have access to that specific COURSE on Canvas). Please refer to the Canvas Login Page for the most up to date Canvas login and support information and log into Canvas by visiting on the first scheduled date of our COURSE . If you have not used Canvas before, please take time to review the Canvas tutorial so that you are familiar with the interface prior to the beginning of class.

8 For assistance with Canvas please call 661-362-3344 or direct your question(s) via e-mail to Note that you should be computer literate, with at least basic knowledge of Internet navigation and email procedures since the college can only provide minimal technological support. COC also provides students with an email account for all college business and communication; please go to to set up your student email account. In order to comply with FERPA privacy requirements, correspondence with the college not coming from your student email account will be disregarded. I will be sending out announcements through the Canvas site and you may miss important information if you forget to check your COC student email. Similarly, certain e-mail providers either block or forward emails automatically to a junk mail folder, so please double check that COURSE email communications are not in your spam folder.

9 Because this COURSE is completely ONLINE it is ESSENTIAL that you read through all of the COURSE materials located on the COURSE website. Additional information on this class will be provided in the syllabus that will be accessible from Canvas once the class has started based on the dates listed above. Note that although quizzes will be conducted on the Canvas LMS at the end of each two-week class to test your comprehension of the COURSE material, the actual USGBC exam for acquiring your LEED Green Associate credential is administered by the independent testing agency Prometric. The LEED Green Associate exam will be held on campus at The Learning Center (TLC) adjacent to the COC Valencia campus Library approximately 1 month after the semester ends, otherwise you may take the exam at a Prometric testing center most convenient for you. Specific information regarding registering for the LEED Green Associate exam will be discussed towards the end of the semester.
