CONTROL 1. Ensure that there are no combustible materials at the base of the stack before lighting Flare tip and have a fire extinguisher present.

2 2. Sweep Flare line with purge gas before commencing with lighting of Flare tip. SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Safety Glasses with side shields, hard hat, steel toe boots, Fire Retardant Clothing, gloves, fire extinguisher and personal gas monitor. procedures : 1. Stand up wind of stack (or pit) when lighting Flare . 2. When you use a pilot igniter on a Flare stack: Check that there is no gas accumulation around the base of the stack by performing an LEL check. Close the bleed off at the bottom of the stack when lighting the flame (if equipped). When using a Flare pistol to light a Flare pit, be aware of any grassy areas that might be susceptible to burning. The operational use of Flare guns for the ignition of Flare stacks, except during an emergency situation, is prohibited by EUB IL85-3; however, forestry has permitted their use, where the stack is equipped with an upshot tube and containment basket at the top.

3 3. Fire the Flare pistol vertically when attempting to ignite a Flare stack. It is intended to burn out before returning to the ground. Cartridges that misfire may detonate up to 60 minutes later. Use EXTREME CAUTION. Dispose of in a safe manner. Make sure vessels, pigging and Flare stacks are purged before lighting. When you use an automatic Flare stack igniter: Open the fuel gas valves to the igniter (ball & needle valves).

4 Ensure Power switch is on. Turn switch to hand mode and watch for flame. Once flame is present, turn switch to auto mode.
