1 Question: Does your state have academic standards for health education in grades K-12? And, if so, are schools required to use them? Arkansas Schools are required to use them. #health Colorado Colorado does have health standards adopted by our state board of education along with all of the other state standards (reading, writing, math, etc.) Here's a link to them on the Colorado Dept. of Ed's website: =0&glid2=0. I should note that our statute ( 22-7-1005 (2), ) doesn't specifically name "comprehensive health" as one of the areas for which standards are required, but the statutory list is nonexclusive, giving the state board the ability to adopt standards in additional areas.

Illinois Illinois does have Physical Development and Health standards that students are expected to know and are tested on. Here is a link: Iowa Iowa Code section , subsection 26, paragraph a, subparagraph (2) requires that the core curriculum adopted by rule by the state board of education include "social studies and twenty-first century learning skills which include but are not limited to civic literacy, health literacy, technology literacy, financial literacy, and employability skills; and shall address the curricular needs of students in kindergarten through grade twelve in those areas.

3 The department shall further define the twenty-first century learning skills components by rule.. Secondary schools are supposed to implement the core curriculum by July 1, 2012, while K-8 has until 2014-2015 to fully implement the core curriculum established for those grades (see Iowa Code section , subsection 3). Legislation being considered this session (HF 2380 & SF 2284) may make or provide for future changes to the core curriculum and core content standard requirements. 4 Michigan In Michigan, we do have standards for health education. The state Department of Education has developed them. They are not required per se, but if a school district wants to be accredited and try to meet AYP, etc., it needs its students to perform well on the state assessment which is based on the standards . So, the smart . schools follow the standards ! Missouri Here's a link to Missouri's material: Nebraska Nebraska has state academic content standards in language arts (reading and writing), math, science, and social studies. School districts are not required to use the state standards in these subjects, but are required to adopt local standards that meet or exceed the rigor of the state standards .

5 There are no separate state standards for health education. Personal health was a component of the previous state science standards , but was not included in the revised science standards that were adopted by the Nebraska state Board of Education in October of 2010. While there are no separate state standards for health education, schools are required to offer instruction in health as part of the elementary and middle school programs, and personal health/physical education as part of the high school program, in order to receive state accreditation. nevada nevada has adopted standards for Health and also for Physical Education.

6 You may access the pertinent documents at the following web site: Although Health is not part of the Core academic subjects that must be taught in all nevada public schools, it is grouped with the next tier of subjects that must be taught to the extent practicable . In practice, all of nevada 's school districts use the standards and have these courses of study for their students. Below is the statute that describes this requirement, and I have highlighted pertinent portions: nevada Revised Statutes Designation of core academic subjects;. minimum units of credit required in high school; exception.

7 Additional subjects to be taught. 1. The following subjects are designated as the core academic subjects that must be taught, as applicable for grade levels, in all public schools, the Caliente Youth Center, the nevada Youth Training Center and any other state facility for the detention of children that is operated pursuant to title 5 of NRS: (a) English, including reading, composition and writing;. (b) Mathematics;. (c) Science; and (d) Social studies, which includes only the subjects of history, geography, economics and government. 2. Except as otherwise provided in this subsection, a pupil enrolled in a public high school must enroll in a minimum of: (a) Four units of credit in English.

8 (b) Four units of credit in mathematics, including, without limitation, Algebra I and geometry, or an equivalent course of study that integrates Algebra I and geometry;. (c) Three units of credit in science, including two laboratory courses; and (d) Three units of credit in social studies, including, without limitation: (1) American government;. (2) American history; and (3) World history or geography. A pupil is not required to enroll in the courses of study and credits required by this subsection if the pupil, the parent or legal guardian of the pupil and an administrator or a counselor at the school in which the pupil is enrolled mutually agree to a modified course of study for the pupil and that modified course of study satisfies at least the requirements for a standard high school diploma or an adjusted diploma, as applicable.

Except as otherwise provided in this subsection, in addition to the core academic subjects, the following subjects must be taught as applicable for grade levels and to the extent practicable in all public schools, the Caliente Youth Center, the nevada Youth Training Center and any other state facility for the detention of children that is operated pursuant to title 5 of NRS: (a) The arts;. (b) Computer education and technology;. (c) Health; and (d) Physical education. If the state Board requires the completion of course work in a subject area set forth in this subsection for graduation from high school or promotion to the next grade, a public school shall offer the required course work.

10 Unless a subject is required for graduation from high school or promotion to the next grade, a charter school is not required to comply with this subsection. New Mexico For New Mexico, yes.
