On any structure , providing no damageresults, plant and equipment all fitted only with rubbertyres may stand or travel on permitted waterproofingsystems solely for the purposes of laying an additionalprotective layer or surfacing course on that shall not be permitted to stand or travel directlyon the WATERPROOFING it is necessary for plant, equipment or traffic tostand or travel on a bridge deck that has beenwaterproofed with a permitted system before the layingof an additional protective layer, suitable temporaryprotection shall be provided. All such plant andequipment shall have its tyre treads regularly inspectedand any embedded hard objects protection shall be provided wheredamage to the WATERPROOFING , protective layer oradditional protective layer could result from particularsite (05/01)

The protective layer of a permitted two layerwaterproofing system, or any protective layer additionalto that included as part of a permitted waterproofingsystem, shall be laid immediately after thewaterproofing layer s bonding agent has set or a WATERPROOFING membrane also serves as anadhesive for the protective layer, any additionalprotective layer shall not be laid until the liquidwaterproofing membrane/adhesive has set or (05/01) Materials for WaterproofingConcrete Bridge DecksPermitted WATERPROOFING Systems1 Permitted WATERPROOFING systems incorporated inthe Permanent Works shall have a current BBA (BritishBoard of Agr ment) Roads and Bridges Agr mentCertificate which shall be registered with theOverseeing to commencement of the Works the Contractorshall provide to the Overseeing Organisation a copy ofthe BBA Roads and Bridges Agr ment Certificateappropriate to the work to be undertaken.

Theprocedure shall be repeated for each subsequentoperation either for a different system or a Bituminous Protection2(11/04) Bituminous protection where required as anadditional protective layer, shall comply withBS 594-1 recipe type F surface course mixturedesignation 0/2 except that 5% of the total mixshall be inorganic red oxide and regarded as part of thefiller content, where the additional protective layer isrequired to be Materials for WATERPROOFING BelowGround CONCRETE SurfacesPrimer for Tar and Bitumen1 Primer for sealing CONCRETE surfaces prior towaterproofing shall be compatible with the selected taror bitumen WATERPROOFING material. The viscosity of theprimer shall be such that it penetrates the concretewithout forming a r2 Tar shall comply with BS 76 of viscosity gradewithin the range 30-38 C equi-viscous Back Bitumen3 Cut back bitumen shall comply withBS 3690.

Or(ii)require the system to be sheet membranes bonded with oxidized bitumen theheating and temperature of the bitumen shall complywith the manufacturer s requirements within the limitsstated in BS 8000 : Part means of checking the bitumen temperature shall membranes shall wherever possible be laid in thedirection that the additional protective layer orsurfacing will be laid and compacted by otherwise specified in the BBA Roads andBridges Agr ment Certificate, joints between sheetsshall be lapped with end laps of at least 150 mm andside laps of at least 100 mm. The joints shall bearranged so that:(i)at no point are there more than threethicknesses of sheeting and,(ii)water will drain away from the WATERPROOFING systems shall be laid tofollow the contours of the CONCRETE surface.

Laps, ridges and ripples in WATERPROOFING sheeting, and peaksand steps at butt joints in WATERPROOFING boards, shallnot be greater than 10 mm in Bituminous Protection4 Bituminous protection complying withsub-Clause shall be laid on the clean and drysubstrate, and compacted in accordance with Clause901 to the areas and thickness shown on the Between Additional Protective Layer orSurfacing and the WATERPROOFING System5 The additional protective layer or surfacing laid onthe WATERPROOFING system shall be fully bonded to thesystem for the life of the system. The bond shall beachieved by either:(i)the binder within the directly appliedadditional protective layer or surfacing; or(ii)a separate tack coat which has been assessedby the BBA as part of the registrationprocedure and details of which are given onthe BBA Roads and Bridges Agr the tack coat is of the type activated by the heatof the succeeding bituminous layer the rollingtemperature of this layer shall be sufficient to Workmanship for WATERPROOFING BelowGround CONCRETE SurfacesPriming for Tar and Bitumen1(05/01) Unless otherwise described inAppendix 20/1 and prior to the application of theselected tar or bitumen WATERPROOFING , CONCRETE surfacesshall be thoroughly sealed with an evenly appliedprimer.

The primer shall be well brushed in and notallowed to pond in any r2 For tar WATERPROOFING two coats of tar shall be hotapplied at a rate of spread per coat of 1 litre/m . Thefirst coat shall be allowed to dry before the second coatis Back Bitumen3 For bitumen WATERPROOFING two coats of cut backbitumen shall be hot applied at a rate of spread per coatof litre/m . The first coat shall be allowed to drybefore the second coat is Materials4(05/01) For proprietary materials the method ofapplication, rate of spread, number of coats and otherrequirements for each system shall be as described inthe product literature supplied by the - May 2001 Volume 1 Specification for Highway WorksSeries 2000 WATERPROOFING for CONCRETE Structures2007 (05/01) Integrity Testing of ConcreteBridge Deck Waterproofing1 WATERPROOFING systems to CONCRETE bridge decksshall be tested where required in Appendix 20/1 inaccordance with the requirements therein to verify theintegrity of the (05/01)

Repair and Replacement of BridgeDeck Waterproofing1 The repair and replacement of existing bridge deckwaterproofing systems shall comply with therequirements of Clauses 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2007and any additional requirements described inAppendix 20 - May 2001
