An Affi rmative Action-Equal Opportunity 5 OVERVIEWThe Southshore Areawide Systems plan (SSASP) refers to the southern por on of unincorpo -rated Hillsborough county .

6 The area is north of Manatee county , west of Polk county and east of Tampa Bay. The SSASP includes a number of defi ned communi es, most of which currently have, or are in the process of preparing a community plan . These include the following communi es: Apollo Beach, Balm, Boye e, Gibsonton, Li le Manatee South, Riverview, Ruskin, Sun City Cen-ter, Wimauma and a large por on of unincorporated county denoted as South to the large area included in this analysis and the many communi es, staff used three related geographies ( , maps) and several data sources to produce this document.

7 A por on of the data came from the Census Bureau and used the geographic sta s cal en ty known as Census Tracts. The boundary of the SSASP was used to iden fy those Census Tracts, either in whole or in part, best represen ng the area. The iden -fi ed tracts were used in the prepara on of basic socioeconomic data . This includes the popula on counts, race and ethnicity, and sex by age data . Addi onally, building permit data was compiled for ac vity occurring in this area for the years communi es of Apollo Beach, Balm, Gibsonton, Riverview, Ruskin, Sun City Center, Wimau-ma along with the en re county were analyzed.

8 This data was drawn from the Census Bu-reau s American Community Survey (ACS) for these areas. In this sec on, the Census Bureau defi ned these areas as Census Designated Places (CDPs). As such, boundaries for the CDPs are close but are not an exact match for the adopted community plan boundaries. For example, while the Census Bureau and the Planning Commission both agree on an area denoted as River-view, the physical boundaries defi ning this community diff er. This diff erence is refl ected in the data prepared. The CDPs have the advantage of providing addi onal socioeconomic data from the Census Bureau s 2007-2011 ACS.

9 The data extracted from the ACS for this area includes characteris cs of the popula on for a fi ve-year meframe including popula on characteris cs such as employment, and other housing characteris cs. data provided by the ACS is not an actual count provided by the Census Bureau Southshore Areawide SYSTEMS plan UPDATEA consolidated city- county agency serving the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, Plant City and the county of Hillsborough. 10 The Census Bureau calculates the value at a 90% confi dence level. The ACS data must be understood with its corresponding margin of error (MOE).Finally, some data was presented using the small-est geographic sta s cal en ty prepared by the Census, the Census Block. This data is extract-ed from the Census Bureau s Longitudinal Em-ployer-Household Dynamics Program (LEHD). The LEHD data combines quarterly workforce indicators from the State of Florida, state unemploy-ment insurance wage records, and the Bureau of Labor Sta s cs Quarterly Census of Employ-ment and Wages.
