See Section 1 for non-compliant engines suspect ENGINE and crankshafts have been identified and added toSections 1,2,3 and 4 of this MSB.
2 TELEDYNE CONTINENTAL Motors strongly recommendsthat you review these sections to determine if your ENGINE or crankshaft or if an engineor crankshaft in your possession or under your care has been added to this MSB. BACKGROUND: TELEDYNE CONTINENTAL Motors (TCM) has identified the cause of 14 crankshaftfractures which have occurred in the connecting rod journals on straight driveengines manufactured in 1998 and 1999. The cause of the fractures has beenidentified as composition and processing deficiencies during several discreteperiods of steel production and/or forming operations by suppliers.
3 Thefractures have occurred in new, rebuilt and field overhauled engines withoperational times varying from 15 to 1257 hours. TCM has worked closelywith its suppliers and added additional procedures to insure future has developed an inspection process to identify and replace any othercrankshafts potentially affected by this problem. This will be accomplished bymeans of a metallurgical inspection of two small core samples removed fromthe crankshaft propeller flange. Review of TELEDYNE CONTINENTAL Motorsmanufacturing processes, nitride characteristics, and dimensional characteristicshave not identified any other contributing Mandatory Service Bulletin Revision is issued to specifically identifycrankshafts that have not complied with previous revisions.

5 Affectedcrankshafts are listed as follows:1. Crankshafts installed in Factory New or Rebuilt engines, by enginemodel, ENGINE serial number, crankshaft serial number and heat Crankshafts sold as service spares. First by crankshaft part number, serial number and heat code. Then by crankshaft serial number, heatcode and part 2 of this Bulletin lists all affected crankshafts installed in Factory Newor Rebuilt engines by ENGINE model, ENGINE serial number, crankshaft serialnumber and heat 3 of this Bulletin lists all affected crankshafts by crankshaft partnumber, crankshaft serial number and heat 4 of this Bulletin lists all affected crankshafts by crankshaft serialnumber, crankshaft part number and heat 5 of this service bulletin provides inspection procedures and.
6 To provide instructions for the removal of crankshaft core samples formetallurgical inspection required by this service bulletin is intended to detectmetallurgical anomalies which if present and left uncorrected can resultin ENGINE inspection requires the removal of the AIRCRAFT spinner, propeller andspinner bulkhead to provide access to the crankshaft propeller flange. Twoequally sized core samples will be taken from the propeller flange 180 degreesfrom each other using a customized tool provided by TELEDYNE ContinentalMotors.
7 The removed core samples will be placed into a plastic, zip closurebag and identified by ENGINE model, ENGINE serial number and crankshaftserial number. These core samples must be returned to TELEDYNE ContinentalMotors for NO REVISIONMODAYYEARMODAYYEAR3 of 60041400101701 TMA TELEDYNE Technologies CompanyCONTINENTAL BOX 90 MOBILE ALABAMA 36601 334-438-3411 MSB 00-5 DCOMPLIANCE:For affected engines or crankshafts this inspection must be performed withinthe next 10 hours of service spare crankshafts of the affected serial number range mustbe inspected prior to installation in any.

Affected ENGINE serial numbersare specified preceding series engines that have had a replacement crankshaft installedduring field overhaul or repair. Affected replacement crankshaft serialnumbers are specified below. Refer to the Crankshaft Serial NumberIdentification below for identification of affected :If your ENGINE has recently had a crankshaft installed that may have beenmanufactured from April 1, 1998, through March 31, 2000, the crankshaft serial numbermust be examined to determine if this inspection procedure s website at will provide our customers with real-time serviceinformation regarding MSB 00-5.
9 Customers may determine if their ENGINE or crankshaft issubject to the required inspection by completing the customer contact information andentering an ENGINE or crankshaft serial number.
