Like myself, Drew Lisby was a charter member of this club , but he was a whole lot more. During his term as club president in 1996-97, he had the vision to see that our club should become a larger part of Rotary and actively support The Rotary Foundation, something we have been doing ever since. Drew always loved parties and social events, and this picture of him at the club s charter celebration in April, 2007 sums it up nicely. Drew was always a very positive per-son, looking for the good in everyone he met. He accepted the physical limitations dealt to him in later years in a manner that amazed all who knew him. Your editor felt honored to know him and to serve with him in Rotary.

Charles G. Tennent, RI President 1957-58 The Lucky 7 Fishing Tournament is on March 14, less than 4 weeks from now. Sponsors, prizes & anglers are all needed! New projects presented at club Assembly By Guest Editor Carol Garner from meeting of February 3rd Before the bell had a chance to ring, several of the early rising mem-bers were busy stuffing brochures for the Charlotte Harbor Rotary Lucky 7 Fishing Tournament. Most of them were finished by the time President Bonnie started the meeting, right on time, with the prayer, pledge and God Bless America.

We knew there would be a lot of fines and happy dollars when Wayne Sallade - cov-ered from head to toe in Steelers garb - walked into the room. After breakfast was over, the busi-ness meeting started first with wel-come dollars for our regular winter visitors - Don, George, Lloyd, Karol, and Dave Kennedy. This was fol-lowed by sad and happy dollars - sad dollars because Carl Rehling and Tom Fisher were both back in the hospital. Happy dollars and birthday dollars came from all over the room, most of them for the Steelers, too fast for me to get all of the names. Since this was a club assembly meeting, some of the guests left. A new fishing tournament poster was shown to the members and arrangements were made to get them out to the public.

Mike Colgan discussed adding a costume contest to the fishing contest with prizes and Stephen Carter discussed the fact that sign ups were slow and there is another fishing contest the same weekend so more publicity needs to get to the public. Mike Colgan presented another project for consideration - A concert competition be-tween area high schools. During the discus-sion and before the meeting was over, they decided that they would contact the high schools, including Lemon Bay and North Port and would consider the jazz band from those schools presenting the program. There would be a charge for the public with all the money go-ing to the school's schol-arship and mu-sic programs.

Mike will get back at a later meeting with more informa-tion. The meeting was closed by the 4-Way Test. Ponce Update: Rotary and The Rotary Foundation Year-to-date results through December 31, 2008 THE 4-WAY TEST Of things we think, say or do First, Is it the TRUTH? Second, Is it FAIR to all concerned? 7 The Bill & Melinda Gates Foun-dation has awarded The Rotary Foundation a further $255 million, in addition to the 2007 grant for $100 million. Rotary is asked to raise a total of $200 million in matching funds by 30 June 2012. To date, Rotarians have raised almost $73 million in cash and commitments towards this challenge. To be more than a third of the way toward our $200 million goal in this economy speaks volumes about Rotari-ans resolve to End Polio Now. Sincerely, Ed Futa, General Secretary Dear Rotarians, December 2008 marked the first month of positive investment results for both Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation since August 2008. For the fiscal year through Decem-ber, RI showed investment losses of US$19 million and the Foundation had losses of $159 million, most of which were un-realized and should reverse once the markets recover.

Revenues from club dues remain slightly ahead of budget, and Rotarian contribu-tions to the Foundation are up by $3 million over last year. Operating expenses for both RI and the Foundation remain favorably below budget in most areas, with the majority of these gains projected to remain through the end of the fiscal year. Global financial markets and their im-pact on Rotary We continue to receive eco-nomic and capital market forecasts from our investment managers. Based on these forecasts, we are projecting no additional investment earnings for this fiscal year, and we expect earnings to be volatile throughout these remain-ing months. Many economists are predicting that the economic recovery may begin in the second half of this calendar year or in early 2010, although any recovery is highly contin-gent on many factors in economies throughout the world.

We are expecting that the current invest-ment climate will continue to present challenges to our organization for the foreseeable future. Therefore, the general secretary is eliminating all nonessential and discretionary spending in both RI and the Foundation for the remainder of this fiscal year. The RI Board and president re-cently took actions to suspend several commit-tee meetings and reduce travel for the rest of the fiscal year. The Trustees reduced 2008-09 World Fund expenditures for 3-H Grants, Vol-unteer Service Grants, and Matching Grants by $ million. The RI and Rotary Foundation finance committees are preparing contingency plans for consideration in establishing austere budgets for fiscal year 2009-10.
