1 Sparkle Vol. 655 / 20 Dec 2012 California Proposition 65 Updates California s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, also known as Proposition 65, requires the governor s office to publish a list of chemicals known by the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The purpose is to improve public health by reducing incidents of cancer and adverse reproductive outcomes. This list is updated at least once a year and contains a wide range of chemicals. Recently a flame retardant tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) was added to the list of chemicals.

2 Effective Oct 28, 2012, retailers and manufacturers would need to ensure that the exposure to TDCPP from their products would not pose any significant risks. TDCPP is a flame retardant commonly used in children's sleepwear, apparels, and home furnishings. The Challenge About 1,000 filings are enforced each year either by mainstream environmental groups or private law firms.
