13 2 Macroeconomic challenges and adjustments The South African economy is expected to grow more rapidly in the next three years than it has in the past two, driven by a strong export performance and accelerating investment. Nonetheless, risks arising from the large economic and financial imbalances between the three main currency areas pose a threat to global and South African growth. In the longer term, economic growth in South Africa depends on how well government policy contributes to the development of human capital particularly through the provision of education and health services and how state and society ensure that structural change benefits all.
