In order to achieve these advantages, however, the virtual machine must be alerted that the guest operating system is using tickless timekeeping. The virtual machine must default to tick counting in the absence of knowledge to the contrary, because if the guest operating system is in fact counting timer interrupts, it is incorrect to drop any.
