Iron functions as a component of proteins and enzymes. Almost two-thirds of the iron in the body (approximately 2.5 grams of iron) is found in hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to tissues, and about 15 percent is in the myoglobin of muscle tissue. The average American diet provides 10–15 milligrams (mg) of iron daily
