The Truncated Normal Distribution
people.sc.fsu.edubetween a randomly selected item and the mean. Assuming the mean is known, the variance is de ned as: var(ˆ()) = Z b a (x )2 ˆ(x)dx For the standard normal distribution, we have that var(˚(0;1;)) = 1. Note that the standard deviation of any distribution, represented by std(ˆ()), is simply the square root

Annex : Calculation of Mean and Standard Deviation
terrance.who.intThe square root returns the result to the original units. The sum of the squared differences of each value from the mean (column C) is 71. Notes: a) In the calculations for variance, n-1 is used rather than n. This has been shown to reduce bias and provide a more true measure of variation. Therefore, for 20 data points, n-1 = 19.
Mean and Standard Deviation - University of York
www-users.york.ac.ukThe obvious answer to this is to take the square root, which will then have the same units as the observations and the mean. The square root of the variance is called the standard deviation, usually denoted by s. It is often abbreviated to SD. For the FEV data, the standard deviation = 0.449 = 0.67 litres. Figure 2 shows the
