1 Tesis Sobre Arquitectura y Sociedad Indexadas por el Grupo de Investigaci n Internacional de Arquitectura y Sociedad GIRAS UPC. 1 NDICE TEM TICO DE CIEN Tesis DE Arquitectura . Introducci n Las relaciones entre la forma urbana y su uso social, la construcci n de un territorio y, finalmente, los proyectos de los arquitectos, est n poco estudiadas y mucho menos comprendidas. El grupo de investigaci n GIRAS desde hace a os ha intentado ayudar a unos atrevidos j venes arquitectos de treinta pa ses diferentes a investigar estas relaciones, siempre desde un punto de vista arquitect nico, pero abiertos a lo que Mija l Bajt n defin a como la perspectiva arquitect nica de una cultura, es decir: abiertos a la profunda estructura social, est tica y filos fica, Sobre la cual cualquier cultura se desarrolla en todas sus dimensiones art sticas, cient ficas y tico pol ticas. Es bajo el paraguas dial gico, primero sin Bajt n y, m s recientemente, con su compa a, que estas Tesis desvelan poco a poco la fascinante vida cultural de la Arquitectura que yo mismo he definido como topog nesis , o sea como desarrollo de una Arquitectura como lugar.

2 Los problemas fundamentales que estas Tesis afrontan se refieren a tres escenarios de investigaci n que funcionan simult neamente: a) Al escenario educativo en escuelas y universidades, para desvelar c mo se conciben los proyectos en las mentes de los futuros . arquitectos; b) Al escenario social y urban stico de planificaci n de territorios y ciudades en el pasado hist rico y en el presente, y c) Al escenario profesional que proyecta y construye territorios en equipos cada d a m s complejos e interdisciplinares con ayuda de potentes instrumentos de dise o. De esta forma: Educaci n, Sociedad y Arquitectura se complementan mutuamente, y permiten iluminar los temas epistemol gicos, sociales, ecol gicos, etc. que podr an dificultar, o bien estimular, el ejercicio de las buenas pr cticas profesionales del arquitecto, tanto en educaci n, como en urbanismo y construcci n de territorios y ciudades. Estas Tesis no agotan, ni mucho menos, el campo de investigaci n, sino que, al contrario, habr an de permitir explorar la Arquitectura con mucha m s profundidad y riqueza.

3 Por ejemplo: A) Cu les son las interacciones positivas entre Arquitectura de un lado, y las artes, las ciencias y las pol ticas de otro lado? Cu ndo estas interacciones son positivas y cu ndo negativas y por qu ? B) C mo podemos investigar las condiciones de participaci n social que posibilitan unas buenas pr cticas en el urbanismo, en apoyo de una buena Arquitectura ? Qu . alternativas hay al urbanismo globalizado actual aplicando las Tesis del proyecto local de, por ejemplo, Alberto Magnaghi? C) C mo analizar el valor arquitect nico del mundo param trico digital y global que gobierna el proceso de dise o arquitect nico y urban stico? Cu les son los procesos de apropiaci n simb lica de los lugares en el mundo contempor neo? C mo construimos hoy las memorias y las identidades tanto individuales como sociales a trav s de la Arquitectura y del urbanismo? D) A d nde han ido a parar los principios de las arquitecturas de hace cien a os cuando reinaba una euforia de cambio, de progreso y de libertad individual y social?

4 C mo conseguir hoy una innovaci n que impacte positivamente la cultura y la salud mental, f sica y social de la vida humana global y local? C mo cultivar la naturaleza en lugar de destruirla? C mo analizar las distintas arquitecturas de una manera justa, ver dica y est ticamente valiosa, tanto a nivel intra cultural como inter cultural e inter textual? D) Cu les son los fundamentos de una Arquitectura en las condiciones econ micas y t cnicas actuales? Qu formas de habitar son las m s acertadas y c mo deben variar seg n las diversas culturas? Finalmente, si estas Tesis ayudan a comprender de qu manera y porqu la Arquitectura y el urbanismo son formas de vida , habr valido la pena intentarlo dentro de unas limitaciones evidentes de espacio, becas, etc. en la Universidad Polit cnica de Catalu a, en su Escuela T cnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Larga vida, pues, a una investigaci n desde un punto de vista arquitect nico.

5 1 THEMATIC TABLE OF CONTENTS OF ONE HUNDRED. PhD OF ARCHITECTURE. Introduction The relations between urban form and its social use, the building of territories and, finally, architectural and urban designs lack study and are poorly comprehended. The research group GIRAS has for years aimed to help some daring young architects from thirty different countries to explore these relations, always from an architectural viewpoint, but open to what Mikhail Bakhtin defines as the architectural perspective of a culture, that is, open towards the profound social, esthetical and philosophical structure, on which any culture is developed in all its artistic, scientific and ethic political dimensions. It is under this dialogical umbrella, first without Bakhtin, and more recently, in his company, that these theses little by little reveal the fascinating cultural life of architecture that I have defined as topogenesis , that is, as development of architecture as place.

6 The fundamental problems faced by the theses refer to three research settings that function simultaneously: a) The educational setting at schools and universities to reveal how designs are conceived in the minds of future architects; b) The social and urban setting of planning of territories and cities in the historical past and at present; c) The professional setting where design and building of territories are carried out by more and more complex and interdisciplinary teams aided by powerful design instruments. In this manner education, society and architecture complement each other, and illuminate epistemological, social, ecological, etc. subject matters that could obstruct, or stimulate the exercise of professional good practices of the architect, both in education, urban planning and building of territories and cities. These theses do not at all exhaust this research field, on the contrary, they should allow us to explore architecture in much more depth and richness.

7 For example: A) What are the positive interactions between architecture, on one hand, and art, science and politics on the other hand? When are these interactions positive and when are they negative, and why? B) How can we research the conditions of social participation that make possible good practices in urban planning, in support of good architecture? What alternatives are there to current globalized urban planning applying the theses of the local project of for example Alberto Magnaghi? C). How can we analyze the architectural value of the parametrical, digital and global world that rules architectural and urban design? What are the processes of symbolic appropriation of places in the contemporary world? How do we build today individual and social memories and identities through architecture and urban planning? D) What happened to the principles of architecture from a hundred years ago when euphoria of change, progress and individual and social liberty reigned?

8 How can we obtain today an innovation that has a positive impact on culture and mental, physical and social health of global and local human life? How can we cultivate nature instead of destroying it? How can different architectures be analyzed in a fair, true and esthetically valuable manner, both at an intra cultural and inter cultural or inter . textual level? D) What are the fundamentals of architecture in current economic and technical conditions? What are the right ways to inhabit, and how should they vary according to different cultures? Finally, if these theses help us to understand how and why architecture and urban planning are ways of life , the effort has been worthwhile within the obvious limitations of space, scholarships, etc. at the Technical University of Catalonia, in its School of Architecture of Barcelona.
