2005 Directed Electronics, Inc. Vista, CAN556L 05-051556L General MotorsPasslock Interface ModuleThe 556l General Motors Passlock Interface Module is used wheninstalling remote start products in GM vehicles equipped withPasslock I and Passlock II anti-theft systems. The 556l provideseasy interfacing while maintaining the integrity of the vehicle santi-theft system. The 556l interfaces with the Passlock systemsby providing the proper Resistance Code (R-Code) at the appropri-ate time. The 556l will also provide, when necessary, a negativesignal to the bulb check wire. The 556l has no effect on thePasslock system when the remote start is not in use. The factoryPasslock anti-theft system will remain fully ! Before beginning the installation, make surethat you are connecting to the correct type of Passlocksystem (either Passlock I, Passlock II or alternate).

2 Youcan determine which type of system is being used by ref-erencing the Vehicle Application Guidesection in GM Passlock System is a key-based, fuel shutdown, anti-theftsystem. The Passlock system requires that the key cylinder bemechanically turned using a key. When the key cylinder is properlyturned, it generates the R-Code, which is sent to the InstrumentPanel Cluster (IPC) in Passlock I systems or the Body ControlModule (BCM) in Passlock II systems. The IPC and the BCM bothhouse the Passlock decoder, which then interprets the the Passkey system, Passlock must detect the correct R-Codeat the correct time. The Passlock I system uses a bulb check wireto activate the IPC Module . This wire is not present in the PasslockII system. In the Passlock I system, the bulb check wire isswitched to ground when the ignition switch is turned to the crankposition.

3 This initiates a time window during which the IPC ana-lyzes the R-Code. If the R-Code is valid and received in the properwindow of time, the IPC sends a code via data bus to thePowertrain Control Module (PCM) to enable the fuel system. Thevehicle will then start and stay running. If the R-Code is incorrect, the vehicle will start and run for a moment and then shut II also uses an R-Code, but rather than going through theIPC, the signal is sent directly to the BCM. The Passlock decoder, built into the BCM, then interprets the !See instructions for Passlock system thatapplies for harness !Do not attempt to use the 556l before learn-ing the Resistance Code. 9 Vista, CAN556L 05-055 The Module must be programmed before first operation, use thefollowing procedure:IMPORTANT!The vehicle must be started within 15seconds or the Module will automatically exit the the ignition On/Off four times (1/2 to 1 second). the 5thtime crank the engine and hold in that will be a series of 4 flashes, continue to hold in thecrank position for 10-20 seconds until a 5thquick flash R code is now learned, turn the engine off and remove theignition is now complete. Test the remote start at to vehicle specific information on DirectWire or refer to doc-ument Application Guide6 2005 Directed Electronics, Inc. Vista, CAN556L 05-05If the vehicle remote starts and then quickly dies, follow the belowsteps in order to resolve the down the remote the Theft System light flashing or off? If the light is offadvance to step 3.

10 If the light is flashing advance to step 4. the vehicle with the key. If the vehicle starts make sure the BLACK wire on the556L is soldered to the center BLACK wire of the vehiclepasslock wires, also verify that the bulb check wire hasbeen correctly identified and is soldered to the BLACK/WHITE wire of the 556l , Check the connection on theVIOLET wire of the 556l to the relay satellite ribbonharness VIOLET wire, both of these wires are required forpasslock 1. If the vehicle does not start and the Theft System lightremains solid, recheck all connections and meter thepasslock wires to verify you have interfaced with thecorrect five seconds and attempt to restart the vehicle with thekey. If the vehicle will not start with the key advance to step the vehicle starts and stays running, recheck all connec-tions. The vehicle has entered Short Tamper mode caused bya failure of the Passlock Module to read the R-code within thetime window allowed, verify that the blue/black off the 556 Lis seeing a ground trigger when remote started, and is sol-dered to the Blue status output from the remote start unit.
