Transcription of BWSC Water Data
1 Water data 1) All second source domestic w ater c onnections require s epa rate a ccounts, meters and check valves at point of e ntry. 2) New Water s ervice(s) shall be activated by B oston Water a nd Sewer C ommission (BWSC) personnel after meter is installe d. In addition, when required, BWSC must ha ve a n approved as- built plan befor e a ctivation. 3) All taps must be direct taps. The only exception to this rule is when making a tap on a Water main that is 10 in diameter or smaller. In these instances the us e of a saddle will be permitted. 4) The c onnection of w ater services 4-inche s and larger shall be made using a t apping sleeve a nd va lve ( Muelle r Type H615 or e qual). 5) If the e xisting Water main is 6-inche s or l ess, any Water s ervice 4 -inche s or larger must be connected using 3- way branc h and a gate v alve. 6) If the building is mor e than 40 feet from the property line, a meter pit in the sidewalk may be required by the BWSC.
7) All outside meter pits and covers shall confor m to the si zes and specifications on file a t BWSC. 8) All meter installations require the installa tion of a Meter T ransmission Unit (MTU) a s part of BWSC s Automatic Meter R eading (AMR) s ystem. BWSC will wire a nd program the MTU with the necessary account infor mation. BWSC reserves the r ight to have the owne r provide a suitable location for the installa tion of the MTU and the i nstalla tion of a ll associated wiring, conduits and pene tration points. Provisions must be made f or a location that does not interfere with beams, columns, panels and other obstruc tions, both on the interior a nd exterior of the building. 9) For a ny property requiring a n ew meter 3 " and above , the property owner s hall provide f or the purcha se o f the MTU. The MTU must be purchased at BWSC, Engineering Customer S ervices Department, 980 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA. 02119. BWSC will connect the meter to the MTU and program the MTU at BWSC's expe nse.
10) For meters 3-inche s and above, only meters of a t ype a pproved by BWSC, in accordanc e with BWSC S tandard Specifications for Water Meters, which regist er in cubic feet and have six wheel enc oders, will be a ccepted. Turbine Meters must be a ccompanied with a st rainer of t he same manufacturer upstream of the meter a nd a spool piece with a mecha nical 3-way (meter diameter x 2 ) a nd 2-inch ball valve downstream of the meter. The 2-inch ba ll valve is used for meter t esting by the B WSC. See S ection M-02b of the S tandard Details. Compound and Fire Meters must be accompanied with a st rainer o f the s ame manufacturer upstream of the meter a nd a test port must be installe d with a nipple a nd ball valve of the a ppropriate s ize which is on the meter body. The b all valve is used for meter t esting by the BWSC. See S ection M-02b of the standard details. These meters will be supplied by the owner a t his own expense. All meters become the property of t he B WSC after the w ater meter has tested accurately and approved by BWSC.
All meters 3-inche s and above must have a b ypass meter installe d and approved by BWSC. 2 11) All meters 2-inche s or l ess will be supplied by BWSC. BWSC will also supply the meter bushings and coupling for each such meter on a new service. 12) All Water meters need to be installe d as close as possible to the point where the w ater line e nters the building. The w ater s hut off valve should be t he s ame si ze a s the s ervice no matte r what size meter to be installed. Also, the spacing be tween flanges on larger s ervices shall be suffi cient to allow BWSC to install a full size meter in the e ve nt that the downsized meter cannot handle the de mand of the building. 13) For a ll new services 8-inch or l arger, a minimum 10-inch diameter s tandpipe with a 16-inch by 18- inch frame a nd cover marke d BWSC must be used with each gate valve. 14) All fire pipes and domestic w ater s ervices must have s epa rate t aps and cannot be interconnected in any way.
15) Any existing Water s ervice to be a bandoned must be shut off, disconnected and sealed at the main and the upright, frame a nd cover r emoved by the Gene ral Contractor. For all services 3" and above, the pipe a nd valve must be c ut and removed from the main. All repa irs on services 3" and above shall be done with full ductile i ron split repa ir sl eeve s or the e quivalent or the installa tion of new piping with approved couplings. The installa tion of lightweight repa ir c lamps (ba nd aids) to plug holes or a s a p ermanent repa ir is not acceptable. 16) The c utting, repa iring, installa tion and capping of fire p rotection building spr inkler s ervices whether f or the demolition of a building, the reha bilitation of a building or a ny other r eason must be a pproved in written request by the Boston Fire Department and Inspectional Services Department. All abandonment of the f ire p rotection building sprinkler s ervice must be c ut and capped off a t the main in the st reet.
All such work must be perfor med by a Licensed Drainlayer. For a l ateral 4 inches and over, the pipe must be c ut and removed from the main. This procedure will involve a main line shut down that the drainlayer will coordinate with BWSC s Water Operations Department. See S ection A-15 of the S tandard Details. 17)All hydr ants must be purcha sed from BWSC. 18)Hydrant relocation requires a site plan submittal a nd approval. If a h ydrant is to be relocated within10 feet of its exist ing location, BWSC may a llow the l ateral relocation of the h ydrant within the sidewalk using 2-45 de gree b ends and proper restraint; otherwise the r emoval of the e xisting connection and appurtena nces and the e stablishment of a new connection and appurtenances is required. All costs, permitting and approvals, for moving hydr ants are the responsibility of the pr oponent. 19)All new Water connections, valves, tees, crosses and bends must be st ationed.
Whe n possible S TA 0+00 should be a ligned with the c or ne r o f the property line o f the st reet where the w ork is taking place. 20) BWSC has the r ight to inspect the installa tion of w ater s ervi ce pipes, fire pipes and appurtena nces and any taps and connections to BWSC s Water distribution system. Inspection points must be delineated on the site plan, along with sign off b y a BWSC inspector. 21) Any request for a n upgrade of an existing Water s ervice s hall be a ccompa nied by a site plan. The e xisting service mus t be c ut and capped at the main. The site plan submission shall include the e xisting Water A CCOUNT NUMBER.
